Field Hockey at Michigan State Sunday, 2 p.m. The Michigan Daily SPORTS Women's Soccer vs. Indiana Sunday, 10 p.m. Mitchell Field Friday, October 23, 1987 Page 9 WINLESS BUCKEYES NO PUSHOVER MlooI By ADAM SCHRAGER If Michigan fans thought that getting 4,000 fans in Yost Arena could be classified as a slim crowd, then the amount of fans drawn at Ohio State this weekend for the Michigan series could be considered miniscule. When the third-place, R e d Berenson-led Wolverines (2-2) travel to Columbus to face the winless Buckeyes (0-2-2), it is not as if there will not be a full arena - that arena just does not contain many seats. With a less-than-gargantuan capacity of 1,580, the OSU ice rink is considered to be one of the toughest rinks in the league to travel to and return with a victory. "We have to prepare more to play in that rink than in any other rink in the conference," said Michigan assistant coach Larry Pedrie. "We s to buckOSU have to go in and be ready to play today as opposed to what happened last Friday night. We probably have had to prepare more mentally this week than physically." THE RINK is suited perfectly for the type of hockey played by the Buckeyes, an extremely physical, strong team. Ohio State runs a high- powered offense that ranks first in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) in the power play. In last week's 4-4 tie against Lake Superior State, all four Buckeye goals were scored with a player advantage. "The way that their team is formed is conducive to the stadium that they play in," explained Pedrie. "In a small, extremely loud rink, a team needs to keep their composure and make sure that careless mistakes are avoided. They will force the action and try to get the crowd into the game. It we make careless errors, we are playing into their hands." Miami proved to be a suitable match for Michigan last weekend as the teams split two games. Mental lapses proved to be the deciding factor in the first game as the Wolverines came out as flat as three- day-old Coca Cola and lost a 6-3 decision. Saturday was a rebounding day for Michigan as it was the week before against Bowling Green. The Redskins fell, 4-3, in what was a very close game throughout. Newcomer Don Stone leads Michigan in scoring with six points coming on four goals and two assists. While things are looking up offensively (Michigan ranks third in the CCHA in the power play), the number of shots that sophomore goalie Warren Sharples has had to fend off has been astronomical. Sharples ranks second in the league with 116 saves in only four games and has been aided greatly by the adept penalty killing - ranked third in the CCHA - performed by his teammates. The Buckeyes, who split last season's series with Michigan, are led offensively by first-year center Paul Rutherford, who, with ten points, leads the league in scoring. He is aided admirably by senior captain Mark Anderson (0-8-8) on left wing, who has played an important role in each of his years as a Buckeye.
