The Michigan Daily-Thursday, October 22, 1987- Page 9 THE SPORTING VIEWS Star search has ended... 0.. McMahon has returned BY ADAM SCHRAGER With all the negative feeling toward the NFL Players strike, it is good to know that there was a definite positive result from all of the absurdity. No, I am not talking about the expansion of the roster or the possible, upcoming union victory in court. Instead, I wish to address an occurrence that will save the Chicago Bears this season. Jim McMahon has been taken off injured reserve. Yes, McMahon's shoulder is healthy. McMahon - the greatest leader to step onto the football field since Roger Staubach - is back. The player strike was a time consuming, perfect diversion from the always confusing Bears quarterback situation. People could only wonder what was going on when the Bears traded mighty mite Doug Flutie to the only place that wanted him, the New England Patriots. What were the Bears doing? What people seemed to forget was that McMahon, the perennially injured "bad boy" of professional football, was patiently biding his time, waiting for the appropriate moment to announce his complete recovery. McMahon, one must realize, could not come forward during the strike because he would not have been the center of attention that his show-boating personality yearns. This season started in tremendous fashion when the Bears showed some of their 1985-86 Super Bowl form by destroying the New York Giants in the first Monday night game of the season. After another easy victory the following week, the strike transpired and the scab Bears, or "Scares," took over. The "Scares" even fared very. well for the Mike Ditka-led Bears. In their first two games, both victories, they recorded 20 sacks making many wonder if anyone could budge what seemed to be an unpenetrable defense. This past weekend, though, put an end to the ecstasy and firmly entrenched in my mind that this debacle we called a strike had to end. When someone like Florian Kempf can become a hero and the New Orleans Saints can win in Chicago's Soldier Field, it is time to call for help. With the regular Bears back, joined by a few, "Scares," the Bears will be a contender. But being just a contender for Ditka and the Bear organization is not enough. In order to be champion, Chicago needs Jim McMahon. Now, I will be the first to recognize Mike Tomczak's improvement at quarterback this year, but he can not, and will not, win the Super Bowl for the Bears. Neither Doug Flutie nor Steve Fuller could accomplish that elusive goal. McMahon is the answer and no matter whether one likes him or not, no one can deny the extent of McMahon's success. He has won over 90 percent of the games that he has started in a Chicago uniform. But it is not his talent that has been missed because everyone knows that McMahon rarely throws a tight spiral. It is the leadership and character that has been sorely lacking in Chicago since Charles Martin ungratiously introduced McMahon's shoulder to the hardened astroturf in Soldier Field last winter. Now that McMahon's leadership and his wobbly passes have returned, the season has been given new meaning for Chicago. The Bears have the talent, confidence, arrogance, and now leadership to win the Super Bowl. If McMahon remains healthy, I think the word destiny will take on new connotations. 2nd Annual Fall Stereo Sale Just one year ago we celebrated the opening of our Ann Arbor store. We're very pleased and gratified with the success we've had in Ann Arbor in just one year. To celebrate our 1st Anniversary we're having a 3-day FALL STEREO SALE Thurs 11-8 * Fri 11-8 * Sat 10-6 GRIDDE PICKS What an event filled week this has been! There has been concern over the health of the first lady. Tension continues to mount in the Persian Gulf. The Twinkies are in the Series. And, of course, everyone has followed the rollercoaster on Wall Street. Perhaps themost shocking event of the week, however, has been overshadowed. Yes, George Steinbrenner has rehired, or should I say re-re-re-re-rehired, Billy Martin. Even the most avid sports fan may not understand George's reasoning for bringing back Billy Ball. Over the past ten years, Martin's status with the Yankees has fluctuated more than the Dow Jones industrial average. But this time George has some every good reasoning. Over the past six weeks, Billy's Griddes record has been remarkable. As a matter of fact, this past week he accumulated a near perfect 19-1 score. However, he Tailed to turn in his Gridde Picks on time to qualify for the $10 ,Domino's Pizza coupon. So here's your chance to become ;a part of this monumental week." 'Just bring in your Griddes picks to 420 Maynard Street by 5 p.m. Friday, and if you score a perfect 20- 0, you too, could go down in history. 1. MICHIGAN at Indiana (pick total points) 2.
