U Page 12 -The Michigan Daily-Wednesday, October 21, 1987 'M' SWEEPS SIX SCHOOLS IN 12 GAMES Spikers take third invitational SPORTS OF THE DAILY Linksters last at By LISA GILBERT It's hard to believe that a little over a week ago the Michigan volleyball team was singing the blues. The team lost senior setter Lisa Vahi with an injury and suffered through a dismal five- game losing streak. The outlook for the rest of the season appeared bleak. But the Wolverines showed remarkable resiliency and rebounded to end their slump. Michigan started on the comeback trail with a much-needed Big Ten victory over archrival Michigan State early last week. The Wolverines then won their third Invatational Championship this year in a 16-team tournament at Delaware last weekend. At the onset of the Spartan match, it looked like the losing streak would continue. Michigan State won the opening game,15-10. Just when it seemed the Wolverines had reached bottom, the offense came alive with a vengance, sweeping the next three games by a combined total of 45-23. Michigan won the match 3-1 and raised its Big Ten record to 2-5. AN IMPORTANT factor in the victory was the dominating net play of sophomore Kim Clover, who finished with two block solos and four assists. Another key contributor was sophomore Karen Marshall, who led the offense with 15 kills. The Wolverines (19-8) carried the momentum into last weekend's tournament in Delaware. The team seemed almost invincible, winning all six of its matches in a best two-out-of-three format without losing a single game. In the opening round, Michigan easily handled Lafayette (15-5, 15-11), Hofstra (15-6, 15-6), and American University (15-6, 15-7). The Wolverines continued their rampage with a second-round win over George Mason (15-8,15- 11) and then went on to defeat Princeton (15-9, 15-8) in the semi-finals. In the final round, Michigan captured the tournament championship in convincing fashion with a 15-7, 15-8 victory over Syracuse. Although happy with the team's performance, Michigan head coach Joyce Davis remained cautiously optimistic. "We're still sruggling in the setters position, but we started to play well in the Princeton and Syracuse matches," said Davis. "I'm pleased with the outcome because it was a true team effort. When you play six matches in two days, you need to have everyone contribute, and that is exactly what we got." The Wolverines hope their luck will continue as they travel to Illinois on Friday and Purdue on Saturday for two important Big Ten matches. DEADLINE: NOVEMBER 13,1987 By STEVEN COHEN The Michigan women's golf team finished their fall season on a down note at the Lady Kat Invitational in Lexington, Kentucky. The team finished a 17th out of a 17 team field. Kentucky finished first, with North Carolina placing second and Indiana taking third. Michigan head coach Sue Leclair considered the season a learning experience since the Wolverines fielded three players yet to face college competition. In addition, Leclair felt that coming into the tournament her team was at a disadvantage since Michigan was competing against a field drawn predominantly from the south, where teams can take advantage of the favorable weather conditions. During the tournament the team averaged a score of 87.6, with newcomer Mary Hartman leading all Michigan golfers with a three-round total of 253. Donna Greenberry, a senior placed second among the Lady Wolverines. The team will renew its season at the end of March as Leclair looks forward to a better spring. Jays re-sign Leach, Key TORONTO (AP) - The Toronto Blue Jays announced yesterday they have picked up the option year for 1988 on the contracts of left-handed pitcher Jimmy Key and Rick Leach, an ex-Michigan quarterback and outfielder. Key, 26, finished the 1987 American League season with a 17-6 record and a 2.76 earned-run average in 36 starts. He tied the club record for victories and set personal highs for innings pitched (261.0) and strikeouts (161). Leach, 30, batted .282 while appearing in 98 games, mainly as a spot and utility player. Spartan delinquent to play on Saturday EAST LANSING (AP) - The playing status of two Michigan State football players - All-Big Ten punter Greg Montgomery and backup tailback Blake Ezor - will remain unchanged despite their recent arrests, Coach George Perles said yesterday. Ezor, 21, a sophomore from Las Vegas, Nev., spent Thursday night in the East Lansing jail after he was taken into custody and ticketed for driving while intoxicated. "Blakes' situation was that it was an internal situation that I took care of. In his situation, (his playing status) will be the same way for the rest of the year," Perles said. Ezor traveled with the team last weekend and played. He picked up 5$ yards on 12 carries and scored a touchdown on a 13-yard run Saturday in a 38-0 victory over Northwestern. Montgomery, 22, of Shrewsbury, N.J., was arrested about 3 a.m. Sunday when East Lansing police responded to a complaint about someone throwing rocks through the windows of an apartment building. Police said they arrested Montgomery after seeing him throwing rocks at the building. Three windows were broken. The Ingham County Prosecutor's office was to decide whether to c.harge Montgomery in the incident. In September, Montgomery was charged with a misdemeanor for his role in an Aug. 29 accident that totalled two vehicles, one of them Ezor's. Montgomery was charged with improper starting of a vehicle for starting up a:construction truck that lurched forward and ran into Ezor's car and a tree before it came to a stop.
