That is often the difference between winning o r losing. Friday night, the Wolverine hockey team was flat. Saturday, it was pumped. The result: a 6-3 disappointing defeat in the series opener followed by an uplifting, come-from-behind, 4-3 victory to gain a split with Miami on the road. "I think we just woke up," said Michigan head coach Red Berenson after Saturday's victory. "We realized that everyone has to play his best at this level. (Friday night) I just felt that as a team we weren't collectively outworking Miami. (Saturday) we made a much stronger effort." Michigan took a quick lead on Saturday when Billy Powers scored a power-play goal from the slot with just 3:26 expired in the first period. Michigan Daily SPORTS 763-0376 The goal was the senior's fourth of the season in just four games. Last season it took Powers fourteen games to score as many. But Miami held tough, tied it up, and captured a 3-1 lead midway through the second period when Redskin captain Mike Orn notched his second goal of the game. JUST 22 seconds later, Michigan sophomore center Rob Brown came away from the sideboards and slapped one from the top of the left face-off circle to beat Miami goalie Steve McKichan low to the glove side. McKichan, who was playing with a tender groin, seemed to aggravate the injury on the shot and was replaced by Doug Timberlake. Within five minutes, Timberlake also was skating to the bench with an apparent injury as third-stringer Paul Ruggieri took his place. Michigan's Don Stonekhad scored the second of his two goals in a two minute span of the second period; it capped a three goal Michigan rally which brought the Wolverines back from a 3-1 deficit to an eventual 4-3 victory on Saturday. The first-year forward was the game's number one star and now leads the Wolverines in scoring with four goals and two assists. "The 'fourth goal (Stone's game- winner) was a combination of hard work by (Mike) Moes and Brad (McCaughey) and me kind of reading the play and being in the right place at the right time," Stone said. "I'm real happy with my play right now. I didn't expect to have four goals after two series." EARLIER in the period, Stone had knocked Redskin sophomore defenseman Steve McGrinder out with a knee injury. According to Miami head coach Bill Davidge, the key to the game was Miami's injuries. "I thought we dominated the third period. You look at those three goals - they were gifts. I'm disappointed in the loss, but if you remove those three or four minutes (in the second period) it's a 3-1 Miami win." Each team fired 11 shots in the third period, as Miami struggled to tie the game. Perhaps their best opportunity came with just under four minutes to play, when Miami defenseman Bob Wallwork unleashed a blast from the point and then followed his shot to flick the rebound at the net. Michigan goaltender Warren Sharples came up big, however. Some extra-cirricular activities followed the play resulting in fighting penalties and the ejections of Wallwork and Michigan defenseman Mark Sorensen. While the Wolverines came out inspired on Saturday, they came up short on Friday night. Although they fired 36 shots at McKichan, Michigan failed to capitalize on their scoring chances and lapsed defensively, leading to a 6-3 defeat. It was parents's weekend at Miami, and the Redskins played with emotion. Miami first-year winger Todd Harkins led the attack with a hat trick, and senior center Mike Orn added a goal and two assists. "McKichan made the big save when he had to, we did a better job defensively and we capitalized on Michigan mistakes," said Davidge. "That was the plan of attack." Michigan defenseman Alex Roberts missed Friday night's game after injuring his knee in practice, but returned to the lineup Saturday. 4. Rowand, who has been a top Michigan finisher since her first year, was clocked at 17:44, 23 seconds behind front-runner Donna Donakowski of Eastern Michigan. "Rowand ran a smart race," said Michigan head coach Sue Foster. "She knew we were depending on her to cover for Cheri Sly and Ava Udavia. She really came through." Sly, who has been nursing an ankle injury all week, still ran an aggressive race to place fourth. She crossed the finish line only three seconds behind Rowand. "Our coach had me wear a more supportive pair of racing shoes, ones that didn't have spikes on the bottom," said Sly. "The course was wet. People were challenging me on the hills, and without the spikes, I had to work twice as hard to pass them back." "I want to play it safe with Sly," said Foster. "Not only did she improve, but she was up all night, sick. She ran a great race." "Indiana was emotionally and physically exhausting for tis. We worked out hard two days ina row this week and didn't want to rest too much. We knew we had a good chance of winning at Michigan State." The Wolverines now look ahead to the Big Ten Championships on: October 31, in Bloomington. As Foster says, the Big Ten title is "up for grabs." Their performance at Indiana proved that the Wolverines, who now have five runners who can cover the 5,000-meter course in under 18 minutes, are top contenders. Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa should be their primary competition. ns, me r, 49 9 ~f b,! ep 4, 4,f 4,y P1 Y!7 4,p 4 ins 4 lineJ Y i Interview Sign-Up and Information Today Day. . . 9 a.m.-3 p.m. North Campus Commo For Graduates In: Electrical/Computer Engineering East Room " Please bring 6 copies of your resu " rumn it~r Qeirue~
