Michigan hopes
to rid defensive
woes at Miami

The changing of the guard is complete in Oxford and Ann Arbor.
Oxford is.known worldwide as a superior scholastic center for
learning. So is Ann Arbor. But when the Michigan hockey team travels
to Oxford this weekend, it will not cross the Atlantic, just the Ohio
border.
At this point, neither the Wolverines nor the Redskins have obtained
a complete education. One year ago, both the Michigan and Miami
hockey teams had to depend upon the efforts of 10 newcomers to protect
the pride and glory of their respective schools. But now those young
Wolverines and Redskins are sophomores, and the teams return 16 and
18 letterwinners, respectively.
EACH TEAM expects contributions from its juniors and seniors,
but the success or failure of each program ultimately will hinge on the
performances of younger players, particularly their ability to improve
defensively.
"Our team is still relatively young, so I'll be looking for leadership
and production from the upperclassmen," said Miami head coach Bill
Davidge. "But the underclassmen still need to contribute in order for us
to win. They're still learning how to make defensive adjustments when
necessary."
Last season, ineffective defense led to Michigan's seventh- and
Miami's last-place finishes. The teams completed last season's CCHA
slate as the conference's worst defensive squads, allowing 174 and 192
goals, respectively. After last week's games, Michigan had a 5.50
goals-against average, Miami a 7.00.
"The key to winning is to play solid team defense," said Michigan
coach Red Berenson. "It's a learning process which involves getting the
puck out of the defensive zone and getting accustomed to defensive
responsibilities. The offense will take care of itself."
Against Bowling Green, the Wolverine offense did take care of itself,
scoring 11 goals on 46 shots on goal in the two-game series.
Sophomore Ryan Pardoski, who tallied four assists to emerge from the
weekend as Michigan's leading scorer, captain Todd Brost (3 assists),
and senior Billy Powers (3 goals) led the Michigan attack.
BRAD MCC.AUGHEY, the team's second leading scorer, with
49 points last season, and newcomers Don Stone and Mark Sorensen
each had a pair of goals.
When the teams met last December in Ann Arbor, McCaughey
scored two hat tricks and added three assists to total nine points for the
series. Michigan took both games, 8-4 and 8-6.
"The puck just bounced the right way for me (in the Miami series),
said McCaughey. "If I hadn't put the puck in the net, (one of my
teammates) probably would have."
Although the Redskins finished ninth in the CCHA the past two
seasons, they are not to be taken lightly. Last year, Miami swept its
first series at home with emotional 6-3 and 4-3 (OT) victories over
Michigan. Miami goaltender Steve McKichan was outstanding, with 77
saves in the series, earning CCHA player-of-the-week honors. However,
McKichan injured his groin last week in practice, missed the Western
series, and is questionable for this weekend.
Despite surrendering 11 goals to Bowling Green, Michigan goalie
Warren Sharples stopped 71 Falcon shots last weekend and refuses to
underestimate this week's opponent. "In this league, you can't take
anyone lightly," said Sharples, the victim of four third-period goals in
last year's 6-3 loss at Miami. "Despite their poor record last season and
their 0-2 start, you have to respect their talent."
With two of last season's top three scorers gone, the Redskins have
lost some firepower. They return offensive threats in junior wingers
Boyd Sutton (19 goals, 37 points in 1986-87) and Jeff Sisto (21, 33)
and senior Mike Orn (22, 45), team captain for the third consecutive
year.
Although Michigan misses the skills of sophomore winger Bryan
Deasley, the Redskins have injuries of their own to worry about.
Besides McKichan, sophomore defenseman Greg Island is out with a
broken ankle, and senior Tom Terwilliger will rest with a groin pull.
