TheMichigan Daily-Friday, October 16, 1987- Page 11 FRIEDER SAYS TEAM 'READY TO GO' 'M' hoops uncle By ADAM SCHEFTER Yesterday would have been a beautiful day even with sub-zero temperatures - the Michigan basketball team began practicing in preparation for the 1987-88 season. Head coach Bill Frieder was pleased with his team's first outing. "I ain't going to lie to you," he said. "I thought it was a good first day. There's no question we're in better shape at this time than we've been in the past. But, it feels good to get out here. No more messing around. We are ready to go." The practice marked the debut of Rumeal Robinson and Terry Mills, both Proposition 48 victims, and highly acclaimed swingman Sean Higgins. Robinson didn't wait long to show what the maize and blue faithful are in for this season. In one drill, the 6-1 guard jumped up to grab a rebound, hung on to the rim with his left hand, grabbed the loose ball with his right hand and laid the ball in. He also was in the best physical shape of any Wolverine, showing barely any signs of fatigue during all the running drills, while other players were sprawled out on the ground begging for mercy. Mills has increased his weight from 195 pounds last year to 235 this year, and it showed. He was slamming balls with authority in the fast break routine. In the running drills, however, he was gasping for air and bringing up the rear. He was so worn down at one point that he moaned, "I'm going hardship." Higgins also was not in the best of shape. The Los Angeles native r way could be found on the floor at the conclusion of the wind sprints gasping out the words, "I can't go no more. I'm dying." At the beginning of practice, the players seemed just as happy as Frieder to get going. After shooting around and loosening up, they all formed one big cluster at center court. Everyone put their arms in and in unison yelled, "Big Ten Champs!" The cheer echoed nicely throughout Crisler Arena. Senior guard Gary Grant (25) will be looked to for leadership by the young but talented team. AROUND THE BIG TEN Ohio State at Purdue these teams are sitting atop the Big The Buckeyes (1-1 Big Ten, 3-1-1 Ten with 2-0 records, and if you overall) are coming off one of the really think that these two will be largest upsets of this football there at the end of the season, then season, losing at home to Indiana, go take a cold shower and think 31-10. Coach Earle "I dress for again. It should be a decent game, games like a mortician" Bruce called but in the long run doesn't matter it "the worst game I've ever seen very much. since I've been here." Everyone in - RICHARD EISEN Ann Arbor is dabbing their eyes, Earle. The Buckeyes should have no problem with the Boilermakers (1-1, '1-3-1), though. Michigan State a t Northwestern A champion is a team that not only wins the big games, but also wins the easy ones as well. If State wants to be Big Ten champion, it must beat Northwestern, a team the Spartans lost to last year, 24-2 1. But if the Spartans' chances ride on the wisdom of coach George Perles, then their Rose Bowl chances are slim. Perles, who was defensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steeler dynasty, called Notre Dame's Tim Brown the best punt returner he's ever seen. A reporter reminded George that he coached someone ' named Lynn Swann. George gave everybody a blank stare and said, "I f : s .till think Brown is better." Geor has quite an eye for talent. Wisconsin at Illinois There is absolutely nothing on the line in this battle between the bottom of the Big Ten. Both teams are winless in the conference and have very slim chances of going to any bowl game. Realizing this, the , Hefty Glad Bag company has decided to give one million dollars and a couple of Zip-loc bags to the winner of this game. The game has been named the Garbage Bowl, with Tom . Bosley the marshall of the parade. Indiana at Minnesota F Which Indiana team will show up f to play Minnesota? Will it be the team that beat Ohio State, or the ;team that lost to that perennial ;football powerhouse, Kentucky? Wetter yet, does anyone care? Both ,..
