ARTS The Michigan Daily Friday, October 16, 1987 Page 7 INXS 'Kick' off American tour By Brian Jarvinen October continues to devastate the pocket books of live music fans tomorrow when INXS arrive at Hill Auditorium on their fledgling American tour in support of their upcoming LP Kick. Saturday's show will be only their second show of the year in the States, with the Kick tour opening in East Lansing tonight. INXS have always enjoyed a special rapport with college aud- iences. Last year the College Media Association voted INXS "best live band of the year." On this leg of the tour INXS play mostly at various colleges until November. Saxophone player Kirk Pengilly told the Daily in a phone interview that they "feel sve kind of owe it to all the college towns in a way because we sort of started in college towns." After this brief stint in America the band moves on to Canada and other in- ternational locales before returning to our shores in February. Kick, which will be released on Monday, is INXS's sixth album, and their fourth since breaking through in the U.S. in 1982 with Shabooh Shoobah. INXS gained an audience in America after the success of Shabooh Shoobah's two singles and their very successful videos on MTV. "The One Thing" and the energetic burner "Don't Change" both had a contemporary sound technology-wise, but INXS rocked like few groups could during the rise of synthesized, lipstick bands such as KajaGooGoo and Culture Club. 1984's The Swing maintained their listenership with two more popular songs, "Original Sin," which earned them a reputation for quality lyrics, and the dance club fave "I Send A Message." Their last album, Listen Like Thieves brought even greater success with four songs that received airplay on commercial radio. Kick comes at a junction in INXS's career. One of the summer's hottest singles, "Good Times," a three day project with Jimmie Barnes which will not appear on the album, has made this album highly an- ticipated. In his interview with the Daily, Pengilly revealed that Chris Thomas, the producer of Listen Like Thieves, has returned to produce Kick, which was also engineered by Bob Clearmountain, one of the best in the business. According to Pengilly, Kick is "a mixture of feels and things to say," and will 'contain some "R&B-ish tracks and quite a few dance-kind of tracks," as well as "classic INXS songs." He adds that the band plans to tour for about a year in support of the LP, and that some of these shows will be recorded for a possible live album. In addition, the band has already completed a video for their new single, which is directed by Robert Lowenstein, who had directed many of their previous videos. With all this activity going on Kick should do quite well, and will probably be fairly high on the charts by the time INXS return to America in February. This will create a dilemma, however, as Pengilly prefers playing smaller places. By the end of their last tour they were approaching arena act status. Pen- gilly remarks that he doesn't like fans having "to pay pretty mean bucks to get a ticket... and then need binoculars to see the band." When asked about returning to Michigan, Pengilly seemed pretty positive that they would, but added that they would probably return to a larger venue than Hill Auditorium. Kick won't be available until Monday, so INXS will provide the best way to hear new material when they play most of it tomorrow night. Until now, INXS fans in Michigan have been spoiled by oodles of shows at small venues including the Fox Theatre and a previous stop at Hill two years ago that has many fans eagerly anticipating their return. Un- fortunately, this could be your last chance to catch an incredible live act without binoculars. INXS appear at Hill Auditorium on Saturday at 8 p.m., with opening act The Brandos. Tickets are $15 and are available at the door and at the Union box office. . wommob.- r ......I I INXS will kick off their American tour tonight in East Lansing before hitting the stage at Hill Auditorium tomorrow night.
