IOWA Gillette gels after close shave By SCOTT G. MILLER By nature, placekickers experience numerous emotional highs and lows. No one haF r-.mind Michigan placekicker Mike Gillette. The junior has had more than his share of emotional high and low moments. This Saturday's game against Iowa marks an anniversary of sorts for Gillette. In last season's 20-17 Michigan victory, he not only booted the game- winning field goal as time expired but also regained his starting job. "The kick (against Iowa) last year will never leave my mind," said the St. Joseph, Mich. native. "It is the highlight of my career here as of now. I hope there's more." GILL ETTE ALMOST never had the chance to better the accomplishments of his first year. He was an immediate success and starter that season, kicking 16 of 23 field goals. The future seemed unlimited. But Gillette made a mistake. Before the Ohio State game, he violated training rules. Michigan head coach Bo Schembechler said no good. Schembechler suspended Gillette for that game and removed him as a starter. "I was in Bo's doghouse last year. But after the incident he said,'Let bygones be bygones,"' said Gillette. "And slowly I was working my way back in and getting the job back. Somehow, I felt I was going to get that opportunity." AGAINST IOWA he got his opportunity. The 6-1, 185-pounder had been splitting the kicking duties with senior Pat Moons. In the first quarter, Gillette set a new Michigan record with a 53-yard field goal. Moons botched his kicks, including an attempt late in the fourth quarter. Coach Alex Agase told Gillette he would kick if the Wolverines had another chance. Gillette ran to the practice net and kicked 20 balls in a two-minute span. Then he received the call. "I was so pumped up that I didn't know who was around me. I knew (Hayden) Fry was going to call timeout," said Gillette. "When I kicked the ball, it wasn't my normal way of kicking. I sideswiped the ball. It looked like I was dancing out there or something. I came way across my body and the ball started off left. "It went toward the left upright and curved to the middle. Once in a while my kicks go outside-in like a golf swing. I thought it was going to miss. Then all the fans started jumping, and I got mobbed." GILLETTE VIEWS this Saturday's game as a battle between himself and Iowa kicker Rob Houghtlin. Facing another great kicker, Gillette feels he is at his best. He loves the competition. Houghtlin won the 1985 Michigan-Iowa game with a last-second field goal of his own. While Gillette hopes Michigan wins this year's contest by a large margin, he will be ready if called on. His field goal last weekend against Michigan State gave him a total of 31 in his career, tying him with Ali Haji-Sheikh as the Wolverines all-time leading kicker. "I'm feeling really good. I'm in a groove," said Gillette of his performance this season. "Monte (Robbins) is a great holder, Borosko (Andy Borowski) does a great job hiking the ball, and our line has done an excellent job protecting me. I couldn't ask for anything better right now. I'm in an excellent situation." Gillette's situation with the team will expand next season when he becomes the punter as well. Gillette also plays catcher on the Wolverine baseball team. He relishes the opportunity to control a game whether on the gridiron or diamond. "I would rather have the pressure on my shoulders rather than anybody elses," said Gillette. After all his pressure filled experiences, the Wolverines trust those shoulders to carry them to victory.
