4 Page 16--The Michigan Daily-Monday, October 12, 1987 M' errs it out in 17 -11 defeat Michigan State's Harlon Barnett (36) comes up with the sixth of seven Spartan interceptions in Saturday's game. Bo has a case of ball-bumbling blues EAST LANSING - Was that really Michigan out there? One of the teams was Michigan State all right - tough defense in the George Perles mold, inept offense in the Perles mold. But seven interceptions for a Bo Schembechler-coached team? It's no wonder the Wolverines lost, 17-11. QUARTERBACK Demetrius Brown threw a complete game for Michigan, striking for 158 yards on 12-of-26 passing. On several occasions the redshirt sophomore showed pinpoint accuracy. He passed beautifully over the middle to McMurtry for a 15-yard gain in the. fourth quarter to keep a possible winning drive alive. At other times he looked awful against the brutal Spartan defense in setting a Michigan record with seven interceptions. Schembechler had reliever Michael Taylorthrowing in the bullpen, but the coach never did call upon the right-hander. In previous contests Taylor (9 of 21, 133 yards, 2 interceptions) hasn't shown Schembechler that he can handle pressure situations. After the game, the Michigan coach was protective of his rookie quarterback Brown (36-of-77, 609 yards, 11 interceptions), using general terms like 'the team' and Darren to be Different BY DARREN JASEY 'we.' "I never see anything good in a loss," Schembechler said. "As a team we just didn't do the job. They (Michigan State) played better than we did and they deserved to win; credit them for that. They didn't turn it over as frequently as we did, and therefore they won a close game. That is the bottom line." Indeed, the Michigan turnovers provided the Spartans with the lift they needed to beat the Wolverines at home for the first time since 1969. "They were a really big factor," said Spartan defensive lineman John Budde. "It turned the whole game around, got our offense pumped up, "I saw Bo Schlembecher on a TV show this morning on ESPN and he said, It's going to be game of fumbles and interceptions and stuff like that,' and he said, 'It's going to be the reason for one or the other team to win,' and it was. I'm happy it went our way." - Michigan State defensive end John Budde got our defense pumped up... "I saw Bo Schlembecher on a TV show this morning on ESPN and he said, It's going to be game of fumbles and interceptions and stuff like that,' and he said, 'It's going to be the reason for one or the other team to win,' and it was. I'm happy it went our way." All of this should sound familiar. In the season opener Wolverine quarterbacks threw four passes to Notre Dame defenders. Michigan's seven total turnovers in that game were its most since 1960. The 1987 Wolverines now have hit the seven turnover mark twice, and Michigan quarterbacks have figured in 12 of those turnovers. "Historically we have not been a mistake team," Schembechler lamented, "but this offense is a disappointment to me in that regard. We turned the ball over way too often." D.E S P I T E the givaways Saturday, the Wolverines amazingly hung in the game until the end. "There's no time in the game where we thought we'd be out of it," said defensive back Erik Campbell. The Wolverines' record dropped to 3-2 overall, 1-1 Big Ten. With the Iowa Hawkeyes on the schedule next, Michigan may be out of the conference race by this time next week - unless it plays more like a Michigan team. Wolverine Jamie Morris outleaps Spartan John Miller for Michigan's only touchdown. Miller Time BY SCOTT G. MILLER On Perles' political agenda EAST LANSING - Conservatives everywhere, rejoice. Forget the problems of 1987: the impending rejection of Supreme Court nominee Robert Bork, the admission by Pat Robertson that he had his first child out of wedlock, and the Iran-Contra scandal. An arch-conservative enjoyed his finest moment Saturday. Michigan State head coach George Perles led his team to a 17-11 victory and may have revived a sagging conservative agenda in the process. Perles' administration had undergone severe scrutiny in recent weeks. The Spartan offense was labeledarchaic and their game plan too conservative. To make matters worse, the complaints began to threaten the fifth-year head coach's tenure. Spartan stadium fans loudly booed an advertisement for Perles' TV show during a 31-8 loss to Florida State. PERLES didn't listen. Even after his team ran the ball on its nine plays from scrimmage in the third quarter against Michigan and registered no first downs, Perles refused to listen. "Someone probably was saying at the begining of the fourth quarter that George is too conservative," said Perles. "If you lose, you're going to get it handed to you over that. I have a chance to please everybody or to do what I think is right and live with the consequences, and that's what I elected to do." Those words would make Lt. Col. Oliver Nort proud. North and Perles are throwbacks to the days of rugged individualism. Perles wanted to play "old country-style football," and that plan succeeded against the Wolverines. No wonder Perles said, "Bo (Schembechler) is my kind of guy." Michigan State's offense mirrored Michigan's offense in the glory days of the 1970s. Perles employed the wishbone for the first time this season along with the usual array of split backs and I-formations. Passing became a foreign concept. "If Woody Hayes was living, he would have liked this football game," said Perles of the Spartans' victory. HAYES no doubt also would have liked Perles' views on many of the issues that today affect the nation. -Motivation - A necessity at all levels of life. After Michigan drove down the field on its opening possession, Perles made motivational adjustments on the sideline. "Kids, athletes, and football players respond to loud, angry criticism.-I've been threatening my two sons for 24 and 25 years now," said Perles. "When they were born, there was that book written by (Dr. Benjamin) Spock. I thought it was bull. I'm glad I did. My sons are tough and so are my players." Perles, though, won't consider a career in psychology after football. "I don't make (motivational) tapes," he said. -Defense - Like any good conservative, Perles, the former defensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers' steel curtain defense, places great emphasis on a strong defense. "I haven't had a bad team against the run in my career," he said. "We still gave up only three 100-yard games at home in Pittsburgh in my 10 years, and O.J. (Simpson) got two of those." -Discipline - No aberrant behavior allowed. Michigan State players had 24 hours to enjoy Saturday's victory and then it was back to work. Nobody dares celebrate in front of Perles.. "Remember (Steeler head coach) Chuch Noll. You never saw any champagne," said Perles. "You never saw anyone squirt (Steeler owner Art) Rooney," Perles said. "If my kids were still young, I wouldn't want them to see some of the championship games now." -Success - Never expect less than the best. Many pointed to Michigan State's opening five games this season against Michigan, Iowa, Florida State, Notre Dame, and USC as a disaster waiting to happen. While the Spartans' 3-2 record may be respectable, Perles wasn't fully satisfied. "I'm a stubborn Lithuanian. I wouldn't concede (losses). I still have to shave," said Perles. "If we had to drop a couple of games, I'm glad it was in the nonconference." -Productivity - Perles offered his answer to productivity problems facing the country. "I visualize myself down at the Detroit whatever office and some guy just because he has to make a living comes in when we lose and has all that stuff on (Spartan paraphanalia) ," said Perles, sympathizing with the man for usually wearing the clothes of n is-- uNn ,h ,a ;c r n ta ntav _ , nn:v1 1n * _ ,..
