The Giants moved within one victory of their first World Series appearance since 1962, using their power and stealing the Cardinals' speed. Game 6 will be Tuesday night in St. Louis, away from the swirling winds that turned Candlestick Park into a crazy cauldron. The Cardinals finally found a way to contain Jeffrey Leonard, who went 0-for-4 after homering in the first four games, but could not control his teammates. This best-of-seven matchup had been billed as power- versus-speed, and the Giants had both. San Francisco Manager Roger Craig promised before the game that his team would add a new dimension, and it showed immediately. Robby Thompson and Mitchell stole bases in the first inning and J o s e Uribe stole another in the fourth after his two-run single sparked a four-run rally that made it 6-3. 5-3; down three to one The Detroit Tigers lost to the Minnesota Twins last night, 5-3, to fall behind in the American League Championship Series, three games to one. No story w a s available at press time. The series resumes tonight in Detroit. THE GIANTS stole only 126 bases to St. Louis' 248 during the season, but swiped more in the first four innings in Game 5 than the Cardinals have stolen in the series. Meanwhile, San Francisco continued to flex its muscles. Mitchell singled home Thompson in the first and launched a solo home run in the third. The giants out- homered St. Louis 205-94 during the regular season and hold a 9-1 edge in this matchup. An injury to St. Louis starter Greg Mathews, the winner in Game 1, opened the way for San Francisco. Mathews left the game after three innings because of a strained quadricep muscle and Chili Davis singled on Bob Forsch's first pitch in the fourth. Forsch, who won Game 3 with two shutout innings of relief, faced four batters and all of them scored as he took the loss. Joe Price pitched five shutout innings of two-hit relief for the victory. He took over after Rick Reuschel, hit hard in losing Game 1, made his fourth straight poor start. Price, who was plucked off the scrap heap in the off-season and spent the first three months in the minors, did not allow a runner past first base. He struck out six and walked one. THE CARDINALS did not make out quite so well with their relievers. Davis opened the fourth with a single off Forsch and raced to third when Will Clark followed with a hit-and-run single. A walk to Bob Brenly loaded the bases and Uribe singled sharply to right for a 4-3 lead, chasing Forsch. Mike Aldrete, leading the Giants with a .417 average with runners in scoring position, batted for Reuschel as the Giants tried to break the game open. Aldrete hit a sacrifice fly off Rick Horton, Uribe then stole third, and Thompson tripled to right-center to make it 6-3. I I 4 E kY f 'r Welcome New Students and Faculty! After receiving a pass from defenseman Todd Copeland, Ryan Pardoski shot the puck into the Bowling Green zone along the boards. The puck hit a crack to the, side of the goal and bounced in front, of the net, where Powers was waiting to give the Wolverines their season's first goal. IF CONNELL was shaken by this turn of events, he was even more flabbergasted when McCaughey faked a Falcon defenseman to.the ice and then lifted, a wrist shot s into the upper lefty corner just two minutes after Powers' goal. Bowling Green, last year's CCHA regular-season champion, came right back with two goals of its own in one-and-a-half minutes. following McCaughey's tally. Senior defenseman and captain Scott Paluch, the game's number one star, scored the first of his two goals on a slap shot from just over the blue. line, and senior wing Andy Gribble tallied to even the score at two until the second period. The Wolverines exploded in the' second period and early in the third period to take a 6-3 lead and set the stage for the Falcon comeback. In a comeback effort that would have made even the Detroit Tigers envious, coach York's squad rallied for four goals in the last nine minutes of the game to defeat the-, Wolverines, 7-6. Emerson, the' CCHA Rookie-of-the-Year last season, scored two goals in the rally, including the game-winner with 1:13 remaining. It was not as if the Wolverines, did not have the chance to'tie the, game. Two chances in the last, minutes were squandered, the best of' which was a mad scramble in front of the net where a missed rebound shot into an empty corner of the net closed the book on Michigan.
