That was the case this weekend as the Michigan hockey team rebounded from a disappointing 7-6 loss to Bowling Green on Friday night at Yost Arena to defeat the Falcons in their own arena, 5-4, on Saturday. Senior wing Joe Lockwood's unassisted goal - the game-winner and series-evener - with 2:02 gone in the third period came sixteen seconds after newcomer Don Stone's goal had tied the game at three. After senior Billy Powers scored his third goal of the weekend to put the Wolverines ahead, 5-3, it was time for the defense and, in particular, goalie Warren Sharples, to take over. S H A R P L E S, the game's number one star, performed admirably making 37 saves. After being hit with two penalties (tripping and delay of game) earlier in the game and being termed by many as the next Billy Smith (the New York Islander goalie who was noted for receiving penalties), Sharples turned in a performance that drew rave reviews from everyone, especially the opponents. "Sharples impressed me tremendously," said Bowling Green head coach Jerry York. "He has definitely improved from last year. Tonight's performance is an example of that." A high, hard slap shot by Falcon Kevin Dahl sent shivers through Michigan head coach Red Berenson as it struck Sharples in the mask with 2:19 left in the game. Bowling Green's Brent Regan scored the Falcons' final goal twelve seconds later on a rebound as a bloody and bandaged Sharples was pummeled with shot after shot. THE FALCONS had thoughts of coming back as they did Friday night, but those were halted by referee Jeff Shell's cross-checking penalty call on Nelson Emerson with just over a minute remaining. The standing-room only crowd of 3,477 in the Bowling Green Ice Arena could only watch as the Wolverines adeptly handled the puck in the last minute to record their first victory of the season. "Whether we would have gotten swept by Bowling Green this weekend would not have mattered," said senior assistant captain Brad McCaughey, who scored two goals Friday. "This team is better than last year's team and we know it. This is a good team that has confidence." Friday night was a game that Michigan should have won and an evening of very strange occurrences for both the Falcons and the Wolverines. Sophomore goalie Paul Connell, in his initial attempt to replace graduated All-American Gary Kruzich, was rudely initiated as the Wolverines scored a freak goal with See ICERS, Page 14 Blue Bowling Green series shows icers have class Lines By DOUGLAS VOLAN After a rollercoaster type weekend, the Michigan hockey team emerged with a 1-1 record and a new confidence. The weekend was full of highs and lows. Holding a 6-3 lead over Bowling Green with eight minutes to play Friday night, the Wolverines were on a high. When the game ended, however, the rollercoaster reached bottom as the scoreboard showed 7-6. The Wolverines had the six. "We were the better team until the last eight minutes," s a i d Michigan hockey coach R e d Berenson. "It's one of those games where you play 50 minutes of good hockey and 10 minutes of poor hockey and it cost you the game." It looked like it was going to be the same old story for the Wolverines - in 11 of their first 16 games last season, the Wolverines went into the third period ahead or tied, and they lost seven of those - games. Road woes Many of the players insisted that it would not affect them Saturday night nor any time in the future. But the Wolverines had to go into Bowling Green and play a team that was sky high. And Michigan was 6- 15-1 on the road last season, one of Berenson's biggest concerns. Come Saturday, the Wolverines put their money where their mouths were, as they scored two goals in 16 seconds at the beginning of the third period to grab a 5-3 lead. Goalie Warren Sharples was shaken up by a puck to the forehead, but he and the rest of the Wolverines held on to defeat the Falcons, 5-4. "I knew that we had the character to do it," said Sharples. "It was just a matter of everyone pulling together and doing their job." The ride had finally ended, and now it was the Wolverines who were sky high. "We proved today that we're for real and we're going to win on the road. And no matter who we're playing, they better be ready for us," said Sharples. "This is one of the hardest piaces to play in in the league," added team captain Todd Brost. "We showed them we could play with them and beat them in their stadium and that shows a lot of character, especially after a tough loss like last night." Brost hit it right on the nose. This team does have character. Last year's team would have folded after Friday night's game. But this team is a year older and a year wiser. Last year's big class of newcomers has finally grown up. proved that he's ready to lead the Wolverines to a big season. Although he gave up 11 goals this weekend, Sharples was outstanding, collecting a whopping 71 saves. "They've got to be pleased with their goaltending," said Bowling Green head coach Jerry York. "(Sharples) is a real solid player." "I don't think he's going to be pleased with his average," said Berenson, "but he finished up the weekend strong and he showed a lot of character when he got nailed in the head and came back to finish the game." Senior Billy Powers, who had three goals this weekend, also profited from last year's experience. "When you play on the road and get the opportunities, if you're going to win, you have to put them away and we've known that since the second half of last year," he said.
