Songwriting is 'Husker's' forte The Michigan Daily-Monday, October 12, 1987- Page 11 YOU SEND US,- 2 DOLLARS, WE'LL SEND YOU A GIFT PACKAGE WORTH OVER 100 DOLLARS 4 111 (Contined from Page 9) documents of live performances with every treble knob on '10.' Ware- house, by contrast, makes full use of the studio, giving the band a fuller sound, and toying with occasional sound effects. Today the band can't fully replicate the sounds on its most recent records, and it's necessitated a re-thinking of how to go about playing live. "You can be a real purist and say 'we're just going to record everything live and that's the way it's going to be,' or you can say, 'I'd like the whole story to read like this,' and when we're per- forming live maybe it's an ab- previated version, in the sense that iy terms of acoustics there's not as many things going on...I think it should be two different things. It really does separate the records and the live performances, but the songs are still the same... In a recent Creem magazine, Tom Petty took a pot-shot at the band's cover of the Mary Tyler Moore Theme, "Love is All Around," and complained that the band should be doing "real" songs like the Beatles' No Reply.' Mould responded,"If he bothered to take a look at who wrote the song, 'Love is All Around' which is the name of the song, he would probably notice it was written by Sonny Curtis, who also wrote 'I Fought the Law' which to me was not a waste of time. So, Tom, the great music historian, that he's always proven to be - as you can tell by listening to any of his records - really did not do his homework on that one...I don't know...wish I had his money, I'd do something good with it." In addition to Petty, Mould is tired of the branch of fandom which has been unwilling to follow the band through it's artistic and tempo changes, some of which coincided with the band's move from SST Records, a small alternative label, to Warner Brothers. "A lot of people had a real bug up their ass about us being successful at what we did, which is writing songs and playing them for people. If anything, I have been more involved in public causes since signing to Warners than when we were hanging out with people who were real nearsighted about life.It all goes back to the jump from SST to Warners," Mould continued. "There are people who always love a play when it's at their high school but when it goes to Broadway it really sucks. Some people have to be one of three people that likes something and if anybody else likes it it's really bad, well, that's not the kind of people we want liking us. We're not trying to pacify one special-interest group. If people want us to be anything else, maybe they should do it themselves." Ironically enough, many of these same fans will probably be drawn by the prospect of the band dipping back into early material. But maybe they'll see the continuity, the bridge which extends from Land Speed Record to the present. When driving a long hard road, gears get shifted every now and then. Husker Du and opening act The Laughing Hyenas play the Nectarine Ballroom tonight. Tickets are $12.50 in advance. The Hufsker Dudes will also be in-store at Schoolkid's.
