Pitchin ace (Continued from Page 1) WHEREVER ABBOTT has gone, he has won fans over not only with'his courageousness, but mainly with his talent. This summer, while on the United States national team travelling in Cuba, Abbott received numerous standing ovations in front of as many as 50,000 Cuban fans. On the U.S. team, Abbott posted an 8-1 record and a 1.70 ERA in 12 appearances. At the Pan American Games in particular, Abbott was effective. Inspired by carrying the flag, he went on to strike out 15 men in 12.2 innings, recording a 2-0 record without allowing an earned run. His performance aided the U.S. team to a silver medal finish. With all the individual attention drawn to Abbott in the past, one would think that he would have become completely self-oriented, but this is not at all the case. honored Abbott at Michigan G W L IP ERA 1986 14 6 2 50.1 4.11 1987 15 11 3 86.1 2.08 Career 29 17 5 136.2 2.83 1987 Honors: -Named All-Big Ten second team. -Named All-District first team. -Named All-American third team. -Selected to Team USA - Pan Am Games. The Michigan Daily-Friday, October 9, 1987- Page 11 Wildcats blank stickers By GARY RESCH Around five minutes after the whistle blew finalizing Northwestern's 3-0 field hockey victory over Michigan, a player dressed in maize and blue pounded the mid-field turf in tantrum-like frustration. Michigan had just lost its third straight conference game after a highly successful non- conference season. Michigan could muster f e w potent offensive attacks as the strong Northwestern defense led by senior Jocelyn Villanueva executed tight coverage throughout the game. "We wanted to control the game a little more than we did," said Coach Karen Collins. Michigan is now 0-3 in Big Ten games after a 7-0 non-conference start. "We designed the schedule to build confidence, which it did," Collins said,"but Northwestern has traditionally been a Top 10 team. We knew we had to play a good game, and we didn't." Michigan is now 0-11-0 against Northwestern, but Coach Collins sees a vast improvement in her team as compared to past years dating back to her rookie season as coach in 1987. "Three years ago we lost to Iowa 14-0. This year we took them to double overtime," she said. Now that the Michigan team has tumbled off of the mountain to which the "confidence-building" non- conference season had lifted them, there can be speculation as to whether the first 10 games sufficiently prepared the team for the competition that it is now encountering in the Big Ten. But with seven conference games remaining Michigan can regroup. "The individual awards are an added bonus, but I want to be in Omaha (site of the College World Series) at the end of the season. It is hard to believe that all of this has happened. To be able to bring this award back to the University of Michigan is a great honor and a tremendous feeling." WHAT SPORTS OF THE DAILY Women kickers bust Broncos HAPPENED? The Big Ten championships will be held at the Indiana site next month. This weekend will be a true test of the Wolverines' progress. Aside from Indiana, Michigan will face other Big Ten rivals Minnesota, Illinois, and Purdue. Top challenges for the men will come from Illinois, and for the women, from Minnesota. Both Michigan teams look strong. All-American John Scherer, sophomore Brad Barquist, transfer students David McKay and Ryan Robinson, senior Joe Schmidt, and sophomore Jeff Barnett, have formed a solid pack this season. Likewise, senior Cheri Sly, captain Traci Babcock, sophomores Mindy Rowand and Jennifer McPuck, juniors Ava Udavia, and Debbie Palmer have placed consistently well for the Wolverines. Both Wolverine teams face their toughest competition of the season. With the Big Ten meet only 22 days away, this Invitational will be a good indication of where the Wolverines will place in the Big Ten. -JENNIFER SAARI Ads Coupons Cartoons etc. PERSONALIZED AND DISTINCTIVE Serving You: erRY o:BARBERS & STYLISTS - LARRY HAIR STYLING FOR THE "'DAN ACTIVE PROFESSIONAL MEN "WOMEN "CHILDREN TUES-THURS MON &8WED FRI-SAT APPOINTMENTS AVAILABLE 8:30 TO 8:00 8:00 TO 5:30 WE WANT TO THANK ALL OUR LOYAL 668=8669 CUSTOMERS OVER THE LAST 14 YEARS BECAUSE CUSTOMER SATISFACTION IS+# 1 806 S.
