Both teams are relatively young and inexperienced. Both teams have been practicing vigorously. Both teams are ready. "We are as ready as we can be," said Michigan hockey coach Red Berenson about this weekend's season-opening home-and-home series with Bowling Green. "We have gone over as much as we can. We are enthusiastic and in essence, we want to play." Tonight's game at Yost Ice Arena and tomorrow evening's at Bowling Green will answer many questions. The most prominent of those concern Bowling Green's capability to defend its regular season Central Collegiate Hockey Association championship and Michigan's ability to challenge for that title. THE WOLVERINES lost one key member on both the offensive and defensive units, but with the 10 players returning from their 1986 recruiting bonanza, the outlook is good. The losses of Brad Jones (graduation) and Jeff Norton (U.S. Olympic Team), provide the opportunity for others to flourish. Junior captain Todd Brost and senior right wing Brad McCaughey will be counted on this season to score more with the absence o f Jones, last year's leading scorer. Junior Myles O'Conner leads the defensive core, while sophomore Warren Sharples, who won the job the second half of last season, will NEW ALL MY MUFFINS DESSERT be in goal. The Falcons' goalie of the past four years, Gary Kruzich, has graduated leaving that position as the most important problem for head coach Jerry York. Kruzich was a two-year All-American who compiled an 83-31-4 record in his tenure with the Falcons. He also was the only goalie to ever backstop a team in the NCAA championship in his first year as a college hockey player. "KRUZICH was absolutely amazing in his four years here," York said, "but now he is gone and we have to replace him. We are trying to break in two new, young goaltenders, so they will both play this weekend. This will be a very good test for them." The then with the dubious distinction of trying to replace Kruzich are Paul Connell and John Burke. Both will receive a chance to play this weekend against the Wolverines and try to help BGSU recapture its 24-6-2 record of last year. Offensively, the Falcons also suffered some setbacks, losing their two high scorers, lain Duncan (graduation) and Paul Ysebaert (pro contract signee). Junior Greg Parks, senior Don Barber, and sophomore Nelson Emerson will be counted on to score in this series between the second- and fifth-ranked teams in the CCHA Preseason Coaches Poll. The series is very important to the Wolverines, who after winning last season's home opener against the Falcons proceeded to drop three straight, including the season finale that clinched the CCHA championship for Bowling Green. "It is important that we play well at Bowling Green on Saturday," said Berenson. "That rink is as tough a rink as we will play in all year. If we play well there, it will give us momentum in our upcoming road series at Miami (Ohio) and Ohio State." , . ;, .r a ,. q r Chocolate Raspberry Muffin Shortcake with Yogurt a Ik *1 $1.65 1220 South University 747-7009 Delivery Available Open 7 Days a Week M-F 7am-1Opm SAT 8am-10pm SUN 8am-9pm Daily Photo Michigan hockey coach Red Berenson will be counting on high-scoring senior right wing Brad MeCaughey to lead this year's young squad. Last weekend it lost two important Big Ten matches to Wisconsin and Northwestern and also lost one of its best players. First the Wolverines were swept by Wisconsin, 3-15, 8-15, 10-15, and then lost to first-place Northwestern, 0-15, 2-15, 2-15. This dropped their record to 12-6, 1- 3 in the Big Ten. "After last weekend we've got to get some stability and regain our confidence,"said coach Joyce Davis,"we had no rythym in offense and we weren't playing with authority, that's why w, lost." Worst of all is the *act that the team may have lost senior co- captain Lisa Vahi for the rest of the season due to an ankle injury suffered during last weekend's matches. The 5'7 setter is Michigan's career leader in kills, total attempts, service aces, assists, digs, and matches played. "With Vahi out we need everyone on the roster," stated Davis. "Our other senior co-captain Heather Olsen has been doing a terrific job as setter." Junior middlehitter Carla Hunter has returned to the team after a knee injury and that should help ease the pain. She played sparingly last weekend and is now able to play whenever needed but as Davis said, "Carla has to get her speed back. Right now, because of the time off, she's playing at freshman level." GO BLUE!!! from all of us at DASCOLA STYLISTS Opposite Jacobson's 668-9329 '0 Vahi .out with injury The Wolverines can expect some top-notch volleyball against, Iowa and Minnesota. The Buckeyes are led by senior Ellen Mullarkey., She is among the Big Ten leaderss in hitting efficiency and kills pere game. She had a bad game the lasts time Minnesota faced Michigan but% Iowa has good ball control and plays consistently so as not to relyg on Mullarkey heavily. Minnesota has in its court first team All-American junior Andrea Gonzalez. She is third in the Big Ten with a .433 hitting percentage and leads the conference in kills; with 6.09 per game. The Gophers also have sophomore Lori Miller who has a .342 hitting percentage' and is second in the conference in' blocks per game with1.56. Davis feels that improvement is definitely needed if Michigan is toy win. "These two clubs are very: offensive. We've got to serve tough[ and aggressively and keep oust blocking steady, which it's been recently. If we can't do that we're in, big trouble." i I LT A T7 / P Michigan Bl Featur- * Wineskins $4.50 orders of 50 or n Great for hayride " Custom Greek S Tank Tops e Custom Silk Scr Embroidery * Paddles " Glassware iNGA AR TY? our House. eis: each with nlore es! weats & eening & '07 STATE STREET COMPUTER (luntcly Chelsea Computer) 334 South State Street, 663-0090 Robin Warner, proprietor Your Headquarters ForC- COMPUTER SUPPLIES " Joysticks " Head Cleaning Kits " Printer Ribbons & Paper .
