The Michigan Daily-Friday, October 9, 1987- Page' Coming Attractions: I I ' I American Music Club The San Francisco band the American Music Club will be playing at Schoolkids' Records tonight as part of their unusual tour of the nation's record stores. Showtime is set for 9 p.m. Sure beats playing Crisler Arena... Fred Small Topical songwriter Fred Small earned a law degree and a Master's degree from the University before persuing a career in music. His politically spiced songs are often compared to Woody Guthrie. Small will-be at the Ark Sunday night at 8 p.m. 'Forum ID (Continued from Page 8) of the play is dissatisfying. A young man falls in love with a prostitute. His slave tries to buy the woman back in exchange for his own freedom. Meanwhile, the boy's parents fight with, insult, and conspire against one another. A fundamentalist General comes to steal the young woman because she is the only virgin he can find. (The girl had to be imported from Crete; there seemed to be only prostitutes and ugly wives in Rome). ' showcases 'U' There are plenty of embarrassing caricatures, like the second servant Hysterium. In addition, the pimp is a transvestite and his three eunuchs seem more like junior high school girls who have gotten drunk for the first time. If they are supposed to be gay, they are shameful caricatures. The representations of women are more diverse; there are several pros- titutes, the old hag wife, and Philia (feel-ya), who couldn't count to five but is "lovely" merely in her ornamental quality. A better suited play might have been chosen not necessarily to expose the quality of the cast, but to show the School of Music's interaction with issues which can't be ignored on campus, particularly bigotry against homosexuals and rampant sexism. The play was written in 1962, which may explain some of the attitudes it maintains, but it need not have been selected; i be performed in 1987. If you are unaware of the talent within our own University, go see A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM. It talent promises to deliver laughs to all who attend - but with a forum for social criticism for the more reflective viewer. The play will be performed at the Mendelssohn Theatre tonight through Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. WEEKEND MAGAZINE Fridays in The Daily 763-0379 JEAN -LUC PONTY THURSDAY OCTOBER 22 Records 86 Provocation Twilight Records Many people who pick up Provocation, the new album from the band 86, will undoubtedly notice the address of the record label, which happens to be in Georgia. This leads one to recall the multitudes of other guitar bands' from the Peach state. Forunately, 86 don't sound anything like an R.E.M. clone, nor do they play in the aging but not dead "Southern Rock" tradition. Instead 86 have created their own sound, of a power trio playing British gloom-and- doom style, but without the I extraneous fashions and haircuts. Listening to Provocation is like walking along the bottom of a seedy looking back-woods lake. The deeper one goes into it, the darker and colder it gets. The bass playing weaves around like mysterious weeds growing out of the muck that you don't want to get too close to. The clear, steady drum beat doesn't overpower the rest of the music, but you can't forget it is there. Guitar player Ken Schenck provides plenty of dirty, hazy activity that swims around unpredictably. And all three members give lead vocals their best shot, to unspectacular but discernible results. With song titles such as "Wheel of Confusion," "Shade of Black," and "Eyeless," it should come as no Big George's CAMERA BAZAAR Sat., Oct.10 Canon " Minolta e Nikon Pentax " Olympus 2019 W. Stadium Ann Arbor surprise that 86 don't exactly have a sunny disposition. At one point the vocalist declares "I'll go out and hang myself tonight." If 86 would put the word "you" in each of their songs about five more times, they could sell all their songs to Robert Smith for the next Cure album. Still, no matter how depressing the lyrics might get, 86 are sure to provide some fun sonic activity, best when heard on headphones. -Brian Jarvinen L 16 L3 COUPON $1.50 OFF Adult Esening admission I or 2 Tickets Good thru 10115/$7 COUPON 1i k~i h i POWER CENTER~ BRING IN THIS AD FOR A GREAT MOVIE DEAL! 7 :3 0 PM I ~ 9 SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME (R) WISH YOU WERE HERE (R) I TICKETS AVAILABLE AT THE MICHIGAN UNION TICKET OFFICE AND ALL 7-"wfa~ms OUTLETS,OR CHARGE BY PHONE 7 6 3 - T K T S v a IV "00000000000000000000" v MAC IN THE MORNING MAC IN THE EVENING MAC AROUND THE CLOCK MACINTOSH CENTER " FULL-SERVICE LASERSETTING " RESUME SPECIALS 540 EAST LIBERTY STREET ANN ARBOR Corner of Liberty and Maynard 761-4539 A Major Events Presentation TheMichigan Daily e CLASSIFIED MAIL-IN FORM - 1.
