The Michigan Daily-Thursday, October 8, 1987- Page 11 MSU's Moore: silent but deadly By RICARDO COONEY State News sports writer To say that Tim Moore is the strong, silent type is an understatement. The first thing you notice about the Spartan outside linebacker is his icy stare, the kind that CBS color analyst John Madden always gets so excited about. "I wanted to play football my whole life," Moore said. "A linebacker or a running back is what I wanted to be my whole life. As young as I can remember, I wanted to play football." And now that he does, Moore is not all that excited about talking about himself. He, along with many other good linebackers, prefers to let his actions on the field do h i s talking. And although he may not seem like a friendly guy, it is not his job to be friendly. When was the last time you knew a linebacker who liked many people he came in contact with? WATCHING FILMS for two hours a day, Moore studies first his opponents' weaknesses, and then contemplates the most punishing scenario in exploiting that weakness. This is just one of the parts that makes up a whole-a whole lot of trouble for those who come u p against Moore. "I think you have to be smart, you have to be fast, you have to be alert, and you have to be ready for a quick change," he said of his linebacking duties. "I just want to get by my tight end, and get to the ball carrier. I have to beat my tight end every play. "As soon as I do that, then I have to find the ball. The only thing I have on my mind, is get to the ball. I have to stop the ball carrier for negative yards." A FIFTH-YEAR SENIOR, Moore saw his first action in 1984 after an injury to former Spartan Thomas Tyree. Moore made 12 tackles, one for a loss, and picked off a pass as the Spartans beat Northwestern. From that day on, he has been hitting Moore and Moore opponents with all the anger and vengeance of a Samurai Warrior gone berserk. Just ask Iowa quarterback Dan McGwire. Late in last week's game with the Hawkeyes, MSU blitzed McGwire. Moore teamed with fellow linebacker Kurt Larson on the play and... well, all you really need to know is that Chuck Hartlieb came in to replace an injured McGwire on the next set of downs. Make no bones about it. Moore is all business. He doesn't possess the outspoken, cocky attitude of a Brian Bosworth, nor does he have the luxury of Chris Spielman's Heisman Trophy hype. What Moore does have that gives him the opportunity to be compared to those two is the ability to punish anyone who dares carry the ball into his area of the field. NATURALLY, as a Big Ten linebacker, Moore is tested week in and week out. At 6-3, 225 pounds, he utilizes his pressing ability to foil runners. This season, after only four games, Moore is off to a good start with 33 tackles, 19 solo, and 14 assisted. Included in those statistics are five tackles for losses and a 10- yard quarterback sack. He also grabbed an interception. in the Spartans first game of the season against USC. V Moore, of course, wants to play professional football some day. But until that days happens, he'll just continue to be a genuine pain in the sides of conference opponents. V3 MSU Sports Information MSU linebacker, Tim Moore, will be looking to wreak some havoc on Michigan's offense this Saturday in East Lansing. The imposing Moore has 33 tackles-five for losses-in four games. Recreational Sports " TOUCH FOOTBALL OFFICIALS NEEDED WE TRAIN-WE PAY-$4.60/HOUR YOU CAN SET YOUR WORK HOURS TO MEET YOUR SCHEDULE!
