A MAJOR EVENTS PRESENTATION
By ADAM OCHLIS
How good is the Michigan
football team?
That is the question Wolverine
football head coach Bo Schembechler
ponders as he prepares his team this
week. Michigan faces perhaps its
toughest test when it travels to East
Lansing Saturday to face intrastate
rival Michigan State.
Michigan (2-1) has outscored its
last three opponents, 142-18, with
the last two games well in hand by
halftime. Michigan State, however,
is in a different class than Long
Beach State. If not for poor
execution on the special teams and
some genuine bad luck, the Spartans
(2-2) could easily be undefeated.
Schembechler, whose only defeat
in Spartan Stadium occurred during
his first season at Michigan in 1969,
wonders how the 12th-ranked
Wolverines will react in its first road
game of the season.
"We need as big a challenge as we
can get because frankly the last three
weeks haven't been entirely
satisfying," said Schembechler at his
weekly press luncheon. "The wins
were fine, but you like to win
against competition that really
means something.
"We're ready for this kind of
game. We've messed around long
enough playing teams like we have
the last three weeks. We're ready for
a challenge."
Schembechler readily admits that
he would have preferred the tough
pre-season schedule Michigan
usually faces. And d e s p i t e
consecutive 49-0 shutouts,
Schembechler continuessto worry
about his defense - a unit that has
sufferred numerous injuries since the
start of the season.
"No, I don't (know how good the
defense is)," he said. "We haven't
played a real substantial offensive
team since Notre Dame. I don't
know how good we are. We'll find
out."

According to Schembechler, it
will not be tough to get his players
ready. Saturday's game marks the
80th meeting between the two
teams. Michigan has won the last
two contests and leads the historic
series, 52-22-5.' 11
In all, 48 of Michigan's 117
players (41 percent) and 61 of
Michigan State's 111 players (55
percent) are Michigan natives.
Schembechler said that the
Michigan-Michigan State game is"
one which the players and coaches
look forward to from day one.
"Everyone's going to be really
anxious and attentive in practice,
Schembechler said. "It's a much
easier coaching job this week than a
week when you're playing
Wisconsin.
"It's always been a great rivalry. I
think everybody recognizes this as a
big, big game. I'm sure it is f6f
them and it is for us. We point fad,
this game every year and they do
too."
Blue Banter
- Except for defensive back Ric
Hassel (dislocated shoulder),
Michigan came out of the Wisconsin
game in good shape, including
Schembechler, whokwas sidelined for
one day last week with a kidney
stone ailment. "Personally, I'm in
great physical condition," he said.
He added that he will have to get the
stone blasted out of his system, but
said, "It won't be this week."
-Nose guard Mike Teeter (knee)
and linebacker Keith Cooper (knee)
will practice this week for the first
time since sustaining their injuries.
Linebacker Steve Thibert has not
been as fortunate. The swelling in
his knee has yet to subside and he
probably won't start practicing until
next week.
-Bo, the guru of baseball prog-
nosticators, on the Detroit Tigers:.
"(The Tigers) will take the Twins in
six. They've got.that lefthander,.
(Frank) Viola, I don't like him. I say
we'll win four out of six and then
move on. 'Frisco and St. Louis? I
think St. Louis will win that. So,
it's going to be a Detroit-St. Louis
series. It'll go seven. It'll be tough.
They've got some pitching and speed
out there. But when it's all said and,
done on the final day, we'll win the
world championship again and all of
Michigan will be proud."
