The Michigan Daily-Monday, October 5, 1987- Page 11 'M' primed for Big Ten title run after battering Badgers By DARREN JASEY Michigan's 49-0 victory over Long Beach State two Saturdays ago caused people to shrug. Saturday's 49-0 win over Wisconsin raised some eyebrows. After dominating a team in their own league, the Wolverines (3-1) appear poised to challenge for the Big Ten championship. "We needed that bad," said defensive tackle Mark Messner. "It was a confidence booster." THE FIRST five times the Michigan offense touched the ball it scored a touchdown. The first five Wisconsin possessions ended with a punt. The halftime score was 42-0. Tailback Jamie Morris had his best game of the season. The senior gained 100 yards in the first quarter and 182 on the game for a 10.1 yards per carry average. Morris also caught two passes for 25 yards. He accounted for 207 of Michigan's 570 total yards. After the game Morris lauded the play of the offensive line. John Vitale, Dave Chester, Tom Dohring, John Elliott, and Mike Husar dominated the Badger defense before resting throughout much of the second half. But the linemen say it helps to have a back like Morris in the backfield. "JAMIE TAKES a hole and he really exploits it," said Elliott. "He makes a few jukes and he's out of there." Demetrius Brown looked comfortable at quarterback, completing 6-of-10 passes for 98 yards and running for 29 yards on four attempts. Most importantly he was not tackled for a loss. "I think Demetrius is really starting to prove that he is a darn good quarterback," said Messner. The oft-injured Michigan defense recorded its second consecutive shutout, holding Wisconsin to 203 yards total offense despite the presence of second and third stringers during most of the second half. LINEBACKER J.J. Grant left the game with a sprained ankle in the second quarter. But will return next week. The Wolverines were already without five injured linebackers, including three starters, before Saturday's game. But, the fired up Michigan defense made stopping Wisconsin's veer offense look easy anyway. 11 TANNING SALON 995-8600 $ 0® wad Expre 115/7 "They were ready for us," said Wisconsin tight end Brian Anderson. "They scouted us well. I thought we could compete with them. I really think they will do well in the Big Ten. I think that opening loss was the best thing that could have happened to them." Michigan lost its opener 26-7 to Notre Dame but has since shown improvement each week. Next Saturday the Wolverines face Michigan State at East Lansing. That ought to turn some heads.
