After a 40-minute delay due to hail and lightning, the whistle beginning the game finally sounded. Kerry Ward broke the scoreless tie in the 20th minute when he scored what turned out to be the deciding problems for the Wolverines. Strong play from the bench helped Michigan turn away the offensive thrust by Schoolcraft and the Wolverines were able to hang on for the win. The Wolverines will defend the Washtenaw Challenge Cup when they take on the Eastern Michigan Hurons this Sunday at EMU. Blue show off for Red in ice match-up By DOUGLAS VOLAN In a high-scoring affair, the Blue team defeated the White team, 8-4, in the annual intrasquad preseason game. More than just a scrimmage, this game was the final opportunity for the players to show coach Berensen what they're made of. Several skirmishes broke out in the game, including fisticuffs between Joe Lockwood and Brad Turner, resulting in the ejection of both players. "Judging by the fight and the play on the ice, it wasn't just a fracas," said Berensen. "There was good intensity out there. Both teams worked hard." There are many unanswered questions after the game, however, as final cuts will be made.today. The big battle is between walk-ons Greg Joyce and Tim Genyk for the third goalie spot. "It's going to be a tough decision," said Berensen. "They both played well and they both were a little shaky at times." The entire goalie situation appeared shaky at times, as number one goalie Warren Sharples gave up four goals in thirty minutes of play. Backup Glen Neary played similarly, giving up three goals in the same amount of time. "It's tough coming in cold like that," said Berensen. "They both looked a little cold and it's a tough way to start." There were bright spots for Michigan as well. Particularly impressive were forwards Brad McCaughey, Billy Powers, and Ryan Pardoski: Powers and Pardoski each had two goals for the Blue team, while McCaughey registered a hat trick for the White team. Despite the fine play of the forwards, Pardoski remains cautious. "We still have a lot of work to do. There's a lot of rough edges that have to be polished." Berensen was pleased with his defense as well. "There was more intensity defensively than in past games at this time." The only blem- ish on an otherwise undefeated record is a 13-13 tie with Louisiana State last week. Heisman Trophy candidate Chris Spielman anchors a defense that has surrendered an average of only 10 points per game. Illinois is a team headed in the opposite direction. Despite returning 18 starters this year, the most in the Big Ten, the Fighting Illini lack a breakaway threat on offense. Rumors of dissension have surrounded the team and coach Mike White's job is on the line unless he produces some wins. Michigan State, coming off a 31- 3 thrashing at the hands of Florida State, travels to Iowa City tomorrow in desperate need of a victory. The offense was stymied last week by FSU, gaining only 215 total yards. The Hawkeyes could be the sur- prise team in the Big Ten this year. They have compiled an impressive 3-1 record with the only loss being a one-point cliffhanger to Tennessee. Despite the absence of last year's team MVP Rick Bayless and a re- volving door policy at QB, the of- fense has played consistently. Coach Hayden Fry tabbed sophomore Dan McGwire as this week's starter after he came off the bench last week to throw for two fourth-quarter touch- downs. Last week the Boilermakers played Notre Dame to a 17-17 half- time tie before the roof caved in dur- ing the second half. QB Doug Downing leads the offense, but the defense remains a question mark, giving up 94 points in three games.
