ARTS pae4 The Michigan Daily Thursday, October 1, 1987 _ . a .. 'Fellows' By Robert Flaggert When asked about the kind of music his band played, singer/song- writer of the Young Fresh Fellows Scott McCaughey had this to say: "I just don't see any reason for listen- ing to or playing just one kind of music. It's like liking only one kind of person... there has to be a vari- ety.' And there is. If you go ahead and compare them to the Replacements, or rank them in one specific genre of music you'll be mistaken. The Fel- lows play a "variety" of different musical styles that are influenced by Aerosmith, Hank Williams, and nearly everyone in between. "We take a little from all kinds of music, be it metal, country, or wimpy pop, and put it all together," explains McCaughey. The result is tremen- dous. An unknown number of years ago, the Young Fresh Fellows was formed when drummer Tad Hutch- inson, and guitarist Chuck Carroll decided to play together after breaking up with their respective bands. McCaughey, who had played in the past with Carroll, remained with him through the transition as did bassist Jim Sangster with Hutchinson. The band managed to stay out of the limelight for the first year or so, focusing on the music they were producing in their garage, which they eventually released on the Popllama label. To date they have released three albums, the first two on Popllama, and their new album, The Men Who Loved Music, o n Frontier. The new LP is nothing but praiseworthy, containing cuts rang- ing from country-like ballads to psychedelic funk. With McCaughey avoid often having nothing to say (and saying it so well) and Hutchinson, Carroll, and Sangster pushing and pulling the listener, we are exposed to a number of dissimilar tunes - the likes of which may never have been heard before. On their current tour, the Fellows are being received quite well across the Midwest considering the fact that they hail from Seattle and tour mainly along the West coast. Rumor has it that since the release of the new LP the boys have been given some sort of renewed energy to reduce stages to smoldering cinders, and home stereos into flame lapping. masses of metallic glory.
