w v Thp. What's happening in Ann Arbor this weekend FIRST-RUN FILMS ANGEL HEART Mickey Rourke, Lisa Bonet and Robert DeNiro star in last year's controversial film of voodoo and the supernatural. At Briarwood. (Fri- day(F) & Saturday(S)12am) THE BIG EASY Dennis Quaid is the young New Orleans lieutenant who is being investigated by D.A. Ellen Barkin for police corruption. The heavy accents and the off-beat music, like Cajun food, all take getting used to. But once you do, it's easy to get swept up in the excitement. Intense and erotic. At State. (all week-- 2:45, 7:45, 9:45) THE BIG TOWN Matt Dillon and Diane Lane paint the town red. Opens at State. (all week--2, 5, 7:10, 9:20; F&S 11:30). CAN'T BUY ME LOVE Ronald's a geek. Ronald tries to buy some popularity by giving the head cheerleader in his school $1000 to be his girlfriend. Ronald is still a geek. Hearts are broken; lessons are learned. At Briarwood. (all week-- 10am, 12, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10; F&S 12am) DIRTY DANCING Awkward teenage girl (Jennifer Grey) falls for Patrick Swayze, a working-class dance instructor in Catskills resort in 1960s. It's rated PG-13; so much for truth i n advertising. At Briarwood. (all week--loam, 12:30, 2:45, 4:50, 7:20, 9:50; F&S- 12am) FATAL ATTRACTION A new thriller/suspense film starring--surprise!--Glenn Close and Michael Douglas. An innocent one- night stand becomes not so innocentt as Close becomes obsessed with Douglas and terrorizes his family. At Briarwood. (all week--loam, 12:15, 2:30, 4:45, 7:15, 9:50; F&St 12am) THEFOURTH PROTOCOLE Frederick Forsyth's espionage thriller comes to the big screen, with Michael Caine as a spycatcher,' matching wits with Russian agent Pierce Brosnan to save the world.' At Briarwood. (all week--loam,' 12:15, 2:30, 4:45, 7:05, 9:30)' FULL METAL JACKET Stanley Kubrick ("A Clockwork Orange") once again explores the darkest corners of human nature. This time the setting is Vietnam and the events are seen through the eyes of Private Joker (Matthew Modine). At Ann Arbor 1 & 2. (S, Su, T, 12:50, 3:00, 5:10, 7:20, 9:30; M, W, Th, F, 5, 7, 9; F&S, 11:45pm) HAMBURGER HILL The most reassuring Vietnam film to date, Hill focuses on the tight bonds between the troop members. Too bad it's coming off the heels of Platoon and Full Metal Jacket because Hill won't get the attention and respect it deserves. A good film in its own right. At Fox Village (all week--12, 2:15, 4:30, 7, 9:40; F&S, 12am) HELL RAISER Clive Barker, England's version of Stephen King, directs this scary tale of a woman trying to bring a former lover back from the grave by becoming an instrument of death. Boo. At State. (all week--2:15, 5:15, 7:15, 9:15; F&S, 11:15). MY LIFE AS A DOG A pleasant surprise from Sweden; a young child in a poor family tries to cope with life. At State. (all week--2:30, 5:30, 7:30) 9 1/2 WEEKS It borders on pornography, and that's okay, as long as there's a story to tell. And there is; Kim Basinger, entranced into Mickey Rourke's sadistic world, tries to free herself from it. Good idea, but poor execution ruins the effort. Some of the most incredibly erotic scenes to date can't make up for the lack of clarity in the story. We're mostly concerned here about the story, right? Well... At State. (F&S 11:45pm) NO WAY OUT Exciting mystery/suspense pic- ture that takes one turn too many. Kevin Costner stars as a new Pentagon staff member assigned to kill the sole witness to a murder that must be covered up. Gene Hackman co-stars. At Briarwood. (F&S 11:30pm) THE PRINCIPLE High School principle Jim Belushi's new job is at a school where street-fighting and gangland intimidation run rampant. Louis Gossett, Jr. is the head of security who promises to help him clean up the school. At Fox Village. STAKEOUT An idea that sounds like it belongs more on a sitcom than the . big screen--two men on a stakeout become involved with their subject-- produces unexpected laughs. A holdout from the summer worth seeing. Starring Richard Dreyfuss and Emilio Estevez. At Fox Village. (all week--12, 2:15, 4:30, 7:10, 9:45; F&S 12am) THE UNTOUCHABLES ). Kevin Costner plays Eliot Ness, trying to put a stop to Al Capone's (Robert DeNiro) bootlegging business during Prohibition. In spite of director Brian DePalma using the camera as if he just got it for Christmas, this film is slick and stylish and a lot of fun to see. At Briarwood.
