M spikers start Big Ten season The Michigan Daily-Friday, September 25, 1987-Page 13 GRIDDE PICKS By MICHAEL SALINSKY The Michigan women's volleyball team has played 13 matches this year. Their 11 non- conference wins are one more than it totaled all last season. The victories will be meaningless, though, when Indiana rolls into town tonight. The match, to be played at 7:30 at the IM building, will be the Big Ten opener for both teams. In their quest to move up from a last place conference finish last season, Michigan's head coach Joyce Davis and her troops are starting over. "It's great to go into the Big Ten season (with our record)," said Davis earlier this week. "But we still need to improve in order to be competitive in the conference." Indiana will also be looking to move up in the conference standings. Last year's 9-9 record (18-13 overall) was good enough for a fifth place finish in the Big Ten. Head Coach Tom Shoji, who came to Bloomington this year after six years at New Mexico State, calls Indiana's talent level "exceptional" and says, "Improving on our fifth place finish is a must." Improved Wolverines set for Hoosiers INDIANA enters the match with an 9-3 record, coming off a first place finish in the Southern Reebok Classic against Houston, South Carolina and Georgia. The Hoosiers also defeated Miami (Ohio) earlier this week in three straight games. Michigan had a tougher time with the same Miami team last weekend. The Wolverines had to go four tough games before disposing of the Redskins in the championship match of the Northern Illinois Invitational. Indiana and Michigan's only other common opponent has been Notre Dame. The Irish beat Michigan convincingly but fell to Indiana, 3-1, early in the year. The Hoosiers are led by senior setter Karen Dunham. The second team All-Big Ten selection from Muncie set the Indiana season record for assists last season with 1,074. "Dunham is the best setter I've ever worked with," says Shoji, "Her ability and leadership is vital to our success in 1987." Other key performers for Shoji's squad are junior Liz Armbrustmacher and sophomore Julie Goedde. Armbrustmacher, the middle blocker and outside hitter from Evergreen, Colo., leads the team with 3.7 kills per game as well as in hitting A major factor in Michigan's early season success has been the play of sophomore Karen Marshall. The outside hitter from Bloomfield Hills led the Wolverines to their victory in the Northern Illinois Invitational. Her 26 kills and 34 digs in the three matches contributed to her team-leading totals in both categories. "Karen did it all for us, both offensively and defensively," said Davis. "She hit well and played outstanding defense." The presence of Michigan's Lisa Vahi along with the Hoosiers' Dunham, creates a matchup of two of the best setters in the Big Ten. Vahi, the senior from Scarborough, Ont., leads the Wolverines in assists. The Wolverine bench, which has been plagued by injuries, will be crucial tonight and for the rest of the season. Coach Davis predicts a "dogfight" in the Big-Ten this year, especially with teams like Illinois and Northwestern, both ranked in the national top 20. Tonight the dogfight begins. The Griddes staff was shocked at the announcement that Joe Biden pulled out of the presidential race. At Biden's press conference, he criticized his inability to keep a lid on some shrewd Gridde picks. "I would've been okay," said Biden, "if it wasn't for that meddling Slippery Rock team. I think the critics caught on when I picked and won again and again with "the Rock". They had something on me. It's on this Griddes issue, I close my presidential campaign."
