4 Page 12 -The Michigan Daily-Friday, September 25, 1987 Around the Big Ten OSU at LSU Ohio State is the only conference team to take to the road this -weekend, and it has its hands full. The Buckeyes travel to Louisiana State for the first ever meeting of two traditional giants. LSU is currently ranked fourth in the nation, sporting a 3-0 record. Led by quarterback Tom Hodson, presently ranked second in the nation in passing efficiency, and running back Harvey Williams, averaging 9.7 yards per carry, LSU has a potent offensive attack. Mike Archer is in his first season as head coach for the Tigers, having spent the past two years as LSU's, defensive coordinator. Seventh-ranked Ohio State will be counting on its ferocious defense, which has accounted for half of the team's 48 points in the first two games. The unit is led by All- American and Heisman hopeful, Chris Spielman, who has eight straight games with at least ten- tackles. The OSU linebacker has now compiled 218 career solo tackles. The game, which will be aired by CBS, marks Earle Bruce's 100th game as head coach for the Buckeyes. NOTRE DAME a t PURDUE This will be the third consecutive week Notre Dame battles a Big Ten team. Thus far, the eighth-ranked Irish have been very successful, as they knocked off Michigan and Michigan State. Both Notre Dame and Purdue are celebrating their 100th year of intercollegiate football. Leading Heisman Trophy candidate, Tim Brown, had a sensational game against the Spartans. The Irish all-everything offensive threat returned back-to-back punts for 71 and 66-yard touchdowns, compiling 275 all- purpose yards. Purdue's defense returns some experienced starters, but not enough to get excited about. The defense finished last in the Big Ten in four defensive categories last season. New coach Fred Akers has a strong offensive line, led by fifth-year senior Mike Connors. FLORIDA STATE at MSU Sixth-ranked.Florida State brings its 3-0 record into East Lansing this weekend to battle Lorenzo White and the Michigan State Spartans. The Seminoles are coming off a 41-24 victory over Memphis State. Dexter Carter will key the Seminole attack. Carter's effort against the Tigers included 311 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns. The Spartans have five players from the state of Florida, including quarterback Bobby McAllister and halfback Lorenzo White. White was held to just 51 yards on 19 carries by Notre Dame last week. With a victory this weekend, MSU could regain its Top 20 status before tangling with Iowa next week. Despite their loss, the Wolverines felt they successfully stuck to their game plan. "Obviously the outcome was disappointing but I was pleased with the way we played," said coach Mike Ruddy. "We were able to do what we had hoped and make them (MSU) play our game. We just didn't get the breaks we needed." Michigan's consistent team play was headed by a strong performance on offense by Steve Burns and with tough defensive play by Matt Schwartz and Dave DiGuisuppe. Mark Kuper provided solid goalkeeping for Michigan. The Wolverines play Western Michigan today at Kalamazoo. . Aerobic Dance . Pool . Ballroom Dance . Bartending .
