FERNANDEZ LOST FOR SEASON; DETROIT 11/2 BACK Tigers TORONTO (AP) -- Toronto lost All-Star shortstop Tony Fernandez for the season, but replacement Manny Lee made the defensive play of the Game Thursday night as the Blue Jays held off the Detroit Tigers, 4-3, and increased its lead in the American League East to 1.5 games. Toronto won the opener of the four-game series before 42,436 fans and extended its lead over the second place Tigers. The Blue Jays, however, suffered a major blow when Fernandez fractured his right elbow following a hard slide by Bill Madlock in the third inning. Replays appeared to indicate Madlock went out of the basepath and collided with Fernandez, who was scheduled to undergo surgery last night.
