Eclipse Jazz kicks off its Fall
1987 season tomorrow night at the
Power Center when they present the
Michael Brecker Band. This area
debut appearance for saxophonist
Brecker as a group leader begins at 8
p.m. and by the evening's end his
exciting new band should have
another term of fine sounds well
underway.
Brecker has a reputation as a
powerful soloist possessed of
prodigious technique. He has a file a
mile long as a studio player, has
worked with artists as diverse as
Charles Mingus, Dire Straits, Bruce
Springsteen, and even Frank Sinatra.
Brecker was a co-leader, with his
trumpeter brother Randy, of the
popular Brecker Brothers fusion
group, and has garnered kudos most
recently for his work with the band
Steps Ahead.
Brecker felt the influences of John
Coltrane and Cannonball Adderly as

a youth, and his contributions to
albums like Pat Metheny's 80/81,
where he goes toe to toe with tenor
giant Dewey Redman, show how
well Brecker has translated those
influences. Now Brecker has a new
album as a leader and is returning to
these early impressions with the
band he is taking on the road.
And what a fine band it is!
Appearing with Brecker at Power
Center Saturday night will guitarist
Mike Stern. Best known for his
work with Miles Davis, Stern is a
hair-raising electric player with an
alarming approach that may leave
you squealing. Bassist Jeff Andrews
has come to the fore with Special
EFX. He has a beautiful tone and is
more than a timekeeper, as his
energizing rhythms for EFX have
demonstrated. Drummer Adam
Nussbaum is a fine player who will.
be remembered by Ann Arbor jazz
fans for his Blind Pig engagement
with the Gary Burton Quartet a
couple of years back. Completing
the group will be keyboardist Joey

Calderazo, a highly touted Brecker
discovery.
Opening for the Brecker Band will
be the Hot Club, a' vigorous jazz
fusion band out of Detroit. And all
ears will be on Michael Brecker and
his pals when they take the Power
Center Stage tomorrow night. Look
out for Mike Stern: this should be
an adult dose.

What a fine way to get the ball
rolling.
The Michael Brecker Band and
The Hot Club will be taking the
Power Center stage tomorrow night
starting at 8 p.m. Tickets are #13.50
at the Michigan Union Ticket
Office, Schoolkids' Records, PJ's
Records, and all TicketMaster
outlets.
