MILLER Start the countdown. Only four more days until The Game. The first ever matchup be- tween Michigan and Long Beach State. A big game. Really huge. Just p how enormous? "Just to win this game is not good enough," said Michigan head coach Bo Schembechler yesterday at his weekly press luncheon. While the only competition on Saturday will be over which school throws better parties, Schembechler still has concerns - especially on defense. Starting linebacker Steve Thibert and backup nose tackle Mike Teeter both will undergo arthroscop- ic knee surgery and will be out three to eight weeks. Thibert, a fifth-year senior, had played his best football as a Wolverine this season. Teeter, who uruns a 4.7 40-yard dash, is an integ- ral part of Michigan's special teams. "They don't come down the pike like that every day," said Schem- bechler of the 250-pound sopho- more. Thibert and Teeter add to the al- ready long list of Michigan defensive casualties. Potential defensive starters Brent White, Marc Spencer, and Curtis Feaster have been injured since the start of the year and proba- bly will not play this season. "We can only absorb so many injuries. It's really going to hurt our n defense," said Schembechler. Senior Carlitos Bostic will return to linebacker to replace Thibert. Bostic had switched to defensive tackle this fall. Sophomore T.J. Osman will replace Teeter at backup nose tackle. Schembechler will de- cide later in the week whether to redshirt Teeter. He prefers not to. The 19th year head coach is run- ning out of defensive players. "We have 14 guys on the injured list from defense, eight of which are real good. Add the 25 freshmen you know aren't going to play, and 40 of the 90 scholarship players are elimi- nated from playing," said Schem- bechler. "Out of the 50 remaining guys, how many guys that you re- cruit turn out to be what you want?" While the defensive backs have remained healthy, changes are being considered in the wake of Washing- L.ong Beach State ton State's 334 yards passing last week. Long Beach State also is a 50- pass per game team. Jack-of-all-trades Erik Campbell could return to free safety after play- ing cornerback against the Cougars. Campbell will join Doug Mallory and David Arnold as the starters. . Schembechler expects Arnold to rebound from a subpar performance last week. The junior missed last Thursday and Friday's practices due to a death in the family. Scrimmages between the young defensive backs early this week will determine the fourth starter. Despite the defensive woes, the big question this week remains - why is Michigan playing Long Beach State? The 49ers of the PCAA lost to Cal State Fullerton, 31-12, last week for their first defeat of the season. Long Beach State had beaten Division I-AA schools Montana State and Weber State to start the year. "I don't really need this (playing a passing team)," said Schembechler. "I'm not going to say we're playing another Notre Dame. But they're on the schedule. The officials are hired...." Blue Banter - The Wolverines appear to have found a capable backup tailback. Sophomore Allen Jefferson gained 118 yards rushing against Washing- ton State. Jefferson still needs some work on his kickoff returns. He al- most fumbled a kickoff into a safety. "Fortunately, he went down on one knee and downed the ball," said Schembechler. "Then he got up and started walking to town. Maybe he was going to the store or some- thing." - Starting offensive guard Michael Dames status is uncertain for this week's game. The senior hurt his shoulder against Washington State. Sophomore tackle Tom Dohring should see more action this week in practice as insurance if Dames can- not play against the 49ers. - Schembechler predicted that the NFL players would not strike. "The pros aren't that dumb," mused Schembechler. "But maybe they are." - After hearing that Arkansas of- fensive line averaged 300 pounds per player, Schembechler said, "Give me five kids like that freshman (Greg) Skrepenak, and I'll show you the widest line ever." The 6-8, 305- pound Skrepenak was one of Michi- gan's top recruits last year. He scored his first career touchdown on a 70-yard run in the fourth quarter of the Wolverines' 44-18 victory. Sign-up for all tours will be at the Circulation Desk in the North Lobby By MARC ADELMAN Despite only one week of pre- paration and the absence of two of the team's top five runners, the Michigan men's cross-country team opened the 1987 season in strong fashion by placing third among six schools at the Michigan Invitational held this past weekend at Mount Pleasant, Mich. John Scherer, the 1986 All- American, was in mid-season form as he cruised to finish first overall with a time of 24:53:08, more than ten seconds ahead of his nearest competitor. The senior from Mary- land placed 22nd overall in the nationals a year ago, and coach Ron Warhurst expects much of the same success this year. "Obviously, John is going to be our leader this year," said Warhurst. "He is one of the top cross country runners in the Midwest and I would love to see him repeat his perfor- mance of last year." While Scherer ran away from the field, sophomore Brad Barquist also ran a strong race, placing sixth overall. Joe Schmidt, Jeff Barnett, and Tim Fraly all finished in the top twenty at the meet to help Michigan to its third-place finish behind Eastern Michigan and Central Mich- igan. "We were very surprised to finish only 15 points behind first place," said Warhurst, "If we could have run our fourth and fifth runners (transfers John McKay and Ryan Robinson), we might have finished higher. But considering this was our first com- petition and we did not have a whole lot of preparation, we performed well." The forecast looks promising for Wolverine men's cross-country in 1987. The team will undergo two weeks of rigorous workouts in pre- paration for its next meet on October 3 at the Notre Dame Invitational. The much needed practice time and the addition of McKay and Robinson along with first-year hopeful Joe McKown have Warhurst excited about the rest of the season. "We are healthy and we have a good attitude," Warhurst said. "If we run up to our potential, we feel a realistic goal would be to finish in the top four at the Big Ten Championships next month and possibly qualify for the NCAA Districts." Spilers face BGSU The Michigan volleyball team is hoping to end its non-conference portion of the season on a high note when it faces Bowling Green State tonight. The Wolverines are off to their best start ever, 10-2. The non-conference games played outside of the Big Ten have been important according to coach Joyce Davis, because "they're giving the team a lot of work which is allow- ing us to get better before the start of the tough Big Ten schedule." Although Davis acknowledges that the team's present record is impressive, there still is a lot of room for improvement. "We've been able to take control of matches lately but we haven't been dominating," the coach said. "We're winning games by close scores like 15-12 or 15-13. We can be 'a much better team and we have been improving with every match." The team as a whole has played very well, especially over the last few matches. Michigan has been getting good play out of sophomore Karen Marshall and senior Lisa Vahi. Also contributing with fine performances have been seniors Heather Olsen and Marie-Ann Davidson. The combination of t h e experienced seniors and the improved play of newer players like sophomores Kim Clover and Wendy Raber should provide Michigan with a very competitive team against their Big Ten opponents. One of the many pleasant surprises this season has been the emergence of a strong bench. Last Saturday against Miami of Ohio, sophomore Laura Melvin came off the bench to serve seven aces. As for Michigan's opponents, the Bowling Green team should provide a tough match. "They're going to put a lot of balls back in our court," said Davis. "They've got one of the best setters in the country in (Battle Creek native) Linda Popovich." A victory tonight could give Michigan the momentum they need to take them to the top of the Big ,Ten. The match will be played at 7:30 p.m. in the Intramural Building. -PETER ZELLEN JOSTENS GOLD RING SALE IS COMING!
