Schembechler, Marshall and the members of the posse agree that the victorious fight increases the marshall's confidence. However, the experience he gains in the battle against a reckless western- style defense may not be very helpful when he has to face the big guns of the Big Ten. The psych- ological edge Brown obtains is more important than the battlefield lessons he learned. The people laugh when the messenger arrives with the latest news. A band of 49ers from Long Beach State will be looking for gold at the A2 Ranch this weekend. "Marshall Brown is going to blow those gold-diggers back to Californee," says the town tanner, looking up from his work. He is busy carving a second notch in Marshall Demetrius Brown's gunbelt.
