Page 10 -The Michigan Daily-Monday, September 21, 1987 A Screaming Trees: Firing out from the backwoods 4 By Mike Rubin Tonight at the Blind Pig marks the return to civilization of SST recording artists Screaming Trees as they take their backwoods barrage out of the untamed wilds of the Pacific Northwest and into the neo- neon nihilism of Ann Arbor. Packing an intense wah-wah wallop, Screaming Trees hail from the teeming metropolis of Ellensburg, Washington (population 13,000), a land where chainsaws are usually associated with lumber and not with the guitar riffs that this overweight x quartet wickedly kick out. Just how far out in the four sticks does this frenzied foursome reside? Try a three-hour drive through the Cascades just to get to Seattle.-There should be about as much chance of finding a hard-rocking original outfit out there in out-house oblivion as finding an industrial drone ensemble in Escanaba; yet rock the Trees do, and they have their new LP Even, If, And Especially When to prove it. Like the Amboy Dukes' (Ted Nugent in his pre-loincloth days) lost masterpiece, the record recalls the '60s without love beads, op-art, paisley worship, or Seeds' covers. Eschewing the cheezy calliope lope of farfisa organ for the face-forward fury of feedback, the band sounds "psychedelic" without that tag's glitzy fashion trappings. With Mark Lanegan's vocals leaving trippy trails and Gary Lee Conner's guitar slashing straight out to anyplace, Screaming Trees sound like a band that time forgot (c'mon, nobody's really named "Gary Lee" these days). Without reverting to retro-reverentia-dementia, the band's hammer-headed hooks hearken back to the days when fuzz-fueled rock spread out in sonic streams all over the small towns and giant garages of this nation, touching places where running water was just a rumor and Sasquatch was a sex symbol. Though I may be more partial to the '70s (and am doing my best to bring back mood rings, pet rocks, and me- first attitudes), Screaming Trees '60s-inspired insanity ranks pretty high in my little red book. Catch the Screaming Trees tonight at the Blind Pig. Showtime is set for 10 p.m., opening band to be announced. Be there or grow your hair. 4 Michigan Daily ARTS 763-0379 I I Washington natives The Screaming Trees bring the sounds of the '60s without all of the trendy trappings to the Blind Pig tonight.
