Susan Kelly, a nun at St. Mary's Student Church, opposes the church's traditional position concerning the role of women. Last Thursday night, Kelly led a candle- light vigil in support of women's ordination into the priesthood. "THE MAIN concern for women is their exclusion in all lev- els of the hierarchical and patriarchal structure of the church," she said. "We are members of this church and want to be treated equally. There is no Biblical reason why women can- not be ordained; it is only religious tradition that holds us back.". Mike Shaunessey, director of the Ann Arbor Chapter of the University Christian Outreach program, said approximately 35 percent of the stu- dent population is Catholic. Father Stevenson, a priest at St. Mary's, said about 3,000 students attend mass at his parish. The church also recognizes Catholic student groups such as Dignity, the gay and lesbian faith group. Among Catholic students Kelly has found "a great sincerity, com- mitment, and desire to live and be recognized as Catholics."
