GRIDDE PICKS An unnamed Vatican source telephoned the Daily late last night in an attempt to intimidate Griddes members into not printing Pope John Paul II's weekend football selections. After printing the historic and somewhat controversial mailing of his Griddes picks earlier this week, Vatican officials were afraid of the added, and possibly negative, publicity. Certain church members were disturbed at the pontiff's decision to play Griddes, due to his recent speeches concerning morality here in the United States. The devilish dissidents claim Griddes to be "a sacrilegious game that has no redeeming qualities." The Catholic hierarchy, while not sharing the critics' views, is worried about the negativeipublicity surrounding the boiling situation. The scenario has members of the clergy hot under the collar due to the Pope's Saturday arrival in Detroit. Not since the gargantuan, garrulous sports extravaganza of Wrestlemania III, have 93,000 religious fanatics come to mass at the Pontiac S ilverdome. Vatican officials, after reviewing Sistine Chapel renovation plans with interiordesigners, spoke to top- ranking Griddes officials about the possible explosive situation. The Griddes staff feels that the tremendously expensive price of their renovation and the relatively poor selling of the John Paul II doll in the United States have Vatican officials distracted and emotionally disturbed. The Griddes staff will do all it can to assure Church officials that their wishes are accommodated, and that the Pope's choices are guarded around the clock at Griddes headquarters. Alongside the Pinkertons hired by the Griddes staff, there are the- world famous Vatican Guard to protect the pontiff's picks. Please join the Pope i n participating in this holy endeavor by bringing your picks to the Daily office, 420 Maynard, second floor, before 5 p.m. today. The winners will not only receive a sermon from Griddes staff members, but an indulgence from Domino's Pizza. 1. Wahington State at MICHIGAN (pick total points) 2. Michigan St. at Notre Dame 3.
