The Michigan Daily-Friday, September 18, 1987- Page 15 Cougars seek third win AROUND THE BIG TEN (Continued from Page 1) Erickson knows it. "The two games that we won are games we'd like to think we should win here at Washington State, " he said. "We were hoping that going into the Michigan game that we would be 2-0 because as I look at the rest of our schedule, we would be in real big trouble if we weren't. "Michigan, obviously, is a perennial power. It's going to be an interesting game for us. If we want to bring respectability to our program here, we've got to go there and play well. We will." Erickson's confidence stems from his team's ability to score points and score them often. By using a thousand different offensive sets, Erickson's theory is to run the opposing defense in circles until his Cougars eventually land in the end zone. On occasion, Washington State will have 10 men on the line of scrimmage with only the quarterback in the backfield. In their two victories, the Cougars threw the ball 64 times, scored 84 points, and amassed 910 total yards - on only 23 first downs. They have recorded ;. plays of 79 yards, 67 yards, 51 yards, 46 yards and 28 yards. Because they score so quickly, the Cougars actually trail the opposition in time of possession by almost five minutes. Erickson doubts his offense can be as powerful against the Wolverines, but that isn't going to stop him from trying. "What we'll try to do is to give the defense as many formation looks as we can and run a lot of different motions and try to spread the field out and try to get our receivers in one-on-one situations," he said. Leading the Cougars' wide-open offense is quarterback Timm Rosenbach, a redshirt sophomore with a cannon for an arm, according to his coach. "He threw the javelin 240 feet in high school," said Erickson. "He's obviously inexperienced because he's only played two games and I think the inexperience has shown a couple of times." R O S E N B A C H' S statistics don't show his inexperience, however. He has thrown for 470 yards on 35-of-63 passing with two touchdowns. Two of Rosenbach's primary receivers are Steve Broussard, a halfback who often lines up in the slot, and Tim Stallworth, the cousin of Pittsburgh Steeler receiver John Stallworth. When the Cougars do line a player up in the backfield, it is often Richard Calvin, a bruising back who has run for 221 yards on just 39 carries. "They throw caution to the wind," said Michigan head coach Bo Schembechler, who said the Cougar offense is a big concern. "You've got some problems (with a team like Washington State). You've got to change up on them defensively, but you don't want to give them the big plays." But the Cougars are not just a big-play team when they have the ball. On defense, they use man-to- man coverage on the receivers and they blitz a majority of the time. As a result, they have caused five sacks and forced seven interceptions, two of which have been returned for touchdowns. Because of its aggressiveness. Washington State tends to allow the big play just as easily as it makes one. It yielded 52 points and 863 total yards in its first two games. Schembechler hopes that Michigan will be as successful moving the ball against the Cougars as Fresno State and Wyoming were. He has said throughout the week, however, that the offense will remain unchanged and that Brown, who suffered through a miserable four-of-13 performance against the Fighting Irish, will remain the starting quarterback. Michigan and Washington State have only met once before. In Michigan's 1983 home opener, the Wolverines defeated the Cougars 20- 17. Erickson said his seniors are looking forward to playing the 19th- ranked Wolverines. "Our players are excited about going back there," he said. "I'm excited about going. We'll go back there and play well. One hundred and five thousand people is going to be interesting. "I think it's an automatic game to get jacked up for."_ White, Spartans tackle Irish Michigan St. at Notre Dame The Irish don't expect to get the kind of breaks they got against Michigan last weekend, but the Spartans must travel to South Bend for this 8:30 p.m. contest. Michigan State coach George Perles and his troops can't wait to get started after an 11-day layoff. Two Mondays ago, the Spartans beat Southern California, 27-13. They are now ranked 17th, while Notre Dame is ninth. Lorenzo White ran for 111 yards on 22 carries against USC. He should have some success against a defense that allowed 6.0 yards per carry against Michigan. Notre Dame quarterback Terry Andrysiak starred against Michigan, completing 73.3 percent of his passes for 137 yards and a touch- down. The Spartan defense conceded 29 receptions for 326 yards to the Trojans. However, three Spartan interceptions sealed the victory. The game will be televised by ESPN. Iowa at Iowa State The quarterback situation at Iowa is even more confusing than Michigan's. Coach Hayden Fry will use his third starter in three games when his Hawkeyes face Iowa State tomorrow. Dan McGuire started the 23-22 loss to Tennessee, and Tom Poholsky got the nod in last week's 15-14 victory. Chuck Hartlieb will take the first snap from center for the. Hawkeyes tomorrow. Hartlieb has played in every game and is the second rated Big Ten passer with 14 completions in 22 tries, no interceptions and one touchdown pass. The Hawkeyes should have an easy time against their cross-state rivals after opening the season with two tough games. Iowa State lost to Tulane 25-12 last week. time for tomorrow's Oregon game. The Buckeye defense was mostly responsible for last week's 24-3 victory over West Virginia. Chris Spielman totalled 19 tackles against the Mountaineers and William White intercepted three passes, running one back for a touchdown. Flanker Everett Ross grabbed five Tom Tupa aerials, one for. a touchdown. Indiana at Kentucky The Hoosiers and Wildcats renew their rivalry. Both teams sport 1-0 records. Kentucky defeated Utah State 41-0 and Indiana beat Rice 35-13. The two teams last met in 1984 when Kentucky rolled to a 48-14 victory. Indiana quarterbacks Dave Schnell and Dave Kramme rank first and third in Big Ten passing efficiency. Schnell, a sophomore, is 12 of 16 for 224 yards and two touchdowns. ,, Blue " The only change Michigan coach Bo Schembechler plans to make with the offense is inserting John Kolesar into the starting lineup at flanker. Kolesar, who has been injured throughout his career, will replace Cris Calloway. - Michigan's defense will have a different look than it did last week. J.J. Grant, who saw a lot of action ,against Notre Dame, will start against the Cougars. Linebacker Bobby Abrams, an efficient pass defender, will also see extensive Banter action. In addition, Anothony Mitchell will make his first career start at free safety, moving Erik Campbell to Allen Bishop's cornerback spot. - Schembechler's record in regular-season, non-conference games stands at 40-9-2 (.804), after a six-game winning streak was broken last week. Prior to the Notre Dame defeat, the Wolverines last regular- season, non-conference loss was to Washington in 1984.
