Women's Softball Tryouts Monday, 5 p.m. Varsity Diamond Contact Carol Hutchins at 763-2159 SPORTS Michigan Baseball open tryouts Sunday, 1 p.m. Ray Fisher Stadium the Michigan Daily Friday, September 18, 1987 Page 13 Runners seek a new balance By IAN RATNER Although Michigan football appears unable to compensate for the loss of their top gun Jim Harbaugh, cross-country coach Ron Warhurst does not envision his runners suffering the same fate. The loss of last year's Big Ten champion Chris Brewster will hurt, but should not cripple the team. The cross-country squad will feature last year's Big Ten runner-up, junior All- American John Scherer, and talented sophomore Brad Barquist. With eleven runners capable of filling only seven spots, Warhurst expects improvement over last year's fifth-place finish, despite capturing the first and second best individual times in the Big Tens. "I WOULD be very, very dis- appointed if we didn't place in the top five of the Big Tens," said Warhurst. "We're considerably deeper. We'll miss Chris Brewster, but we've really tightened up our situation a lot." The improvement is due to the addition of newcomers Joe Mc- Known, Darryl Eddy, and Tony Carna, and junior transfers John McKay and Ryan Robinson. A "scrub" by his own admission during last year's campaign, Eddy surprised the field by taking third in last week's time trials behind Scherer and Barquist. Freshman McKnown and Carna, Ohio state champions in their respective divisions, will provide much needed depth. The top nine finishers from last Friday's time trials will compete in Saturday's Michigan Invitational in Mt. Pleasant, Mich. which features Eastern Michigan, Western Mich- igan, Central Michigan, Michigan State and University of Detroit. This tune-up for the Big Tens will provide a measuring stick as to who will capture the seven spots in the ensuing meets. For the moment, Warhurst will hold out transfers McKay and Robinson, w h o s e eligibility to compete has yet to be finalized. Joe Schmidt, the team's sole senior, junior Tim Fraleigh, and sophomore Jeff Barnett round out this weekend's competitors for Michigan. Although Schmidt placed only seventh in the time trials, Warhurst expects the Gross Pointe native to provide strong finishes as the season unfolds. "I expect good things from Scherer, Barquist, and Schmidt," said Warhurst while noting that last week's top seven finishers will not necessarily represent Michigan in the meets to follow. "We're not prepared to run a championship meet. I usually like two weeks of practice under our belts (before competing). wmm son" " 10 j'w0. Ibeth %' do 0' "0ua. Carter, an All-American at Ohio State, was declared ineligible for college football after signing with agents. Eagles Coach Buddy Ryan said Carter would be able to carve a prominent niche on the team. "If he's as good as I think he is, he'll compete for the starting job," Ryan said. "We know he'll havebto learn (the system)." Carter, while saying he wants to become a starter, indicated he won't be impatient. "I have some good receivers ahead of me and I can learn a lot from them," he said. "I'm basically not put in a situation where I have to contribute a lot immediately." Carter also said he had stayed in condition. "I've caught a lot of passes," he said. "It's just basically the repetitions of practice I need. It doesn't matter how good of shape you're in if you don't know the offense." Terms of the contract were not disclosed at the hastily-called news conference at Veterans Stadium, said Ed Wisneski, an Eagles spokesman. According to a report published Sept. 5 in the Columbus Post Dispatch, Carter was expected to seek a three-year contract worth $900,000, including a $150,000 signing bonus. By drafting Carter in the Sept. 4 supplemental draft, the Eagles gave up their first-round pick in the regular draft next spring. Jeltz doubled home two runs in the second and scored on Juan Samuel's double. Padres 7, Braves I SAN DIEGO (AP) - Benito Santiago homered and doubled to extend his hitting streak to 21 games, longest in the National League this season, and Garry Templeton had a three-run inside-the- park home run as the San Diego Padres downed the Atlanta Braves 7- 1.
