ARTS The Michigan Daily Thursday, September 17, 1987 Page 7 New exhibit honors Kalmbach By Lauren Shapiro Starting this month, t h e University of Michigan Sesqui- centennial Celebration '87 Committee will be throwing a party in the Alumni Center. Former Presidents Ford and Carter, Henry Kissinger, Marcel Marceau, Arthur Miller, and many other celebrated prtists will be attending to honor one of Ann Arbor's most beloved photographers, Bob Kalmbach. The photographs of these dignitaries and famous personalities join a diverse and exciting collection which Bob Kalmbach has selected to exhibit as his "most memorable favorites." Kalmbach has been part of the news-making community in Ann Arbor for over 30 years. During this time, he has enjoyed photographing not only famous personalities visiting the University, but also sporting events, concerts, campus landscapes, and spontaneous shots of people. Kalmbach says he, "loves walking through the diag and just noticing the diversification and ,excitement surrounding the University. Kalmbach's strong bond and dedication to the University is one of the reasons the Celebration Committee decided to pay tribute to his work. Committee member Vivian Shapiro, wife of University President Harold T. Shapiro initiated the idea for Kalmbach's exhibition. Working closely with Kalmbach over the years at various University functions has given Mrs. Shapiro great respect for the photographer and his work. Members of the Celebration Committee decided the University's observance of four landmark anniversaries this year, "would be a marvelous opportunity to exhibit many of his collected photographs." Jean Cobb, an active member of the Celebration Committee describes Kalmbach as, "a great part of the University. He's been contributing to the Michigan scene for over thirty years." She adds that, "not only is his work exceptional, but he is extremely personable and humble." Kalmbach began his career by working with his father at University's Photographic Services. Assisting as a printer gave Kalmbach the experience with lighting, exposure, and filtering to create a great print. Kalmbach says he begins with a good idea, and continues to develop it until he reaches the final product: a perfect print. Kalmbach revealed that sometimes, having a good idea for a print isn't enough. When taking a photograph of the cube outside of the Flemming Administration Building, thinking of an original presentation was no problem. Finding the ice tongs to perfect his composition was the only obstacle he encountered. The exhibition is a very exciting event to Kalmbach. He reflects that over the years, he has learned that success behind the camera depends upon his ability to naturally capture the subject in front of him. He says photographing celebrities it not intimidating but, relaxing. Generally he says, "visitors to the University are warm and genuinely inquisitive about the work. I'm doing behind the camera. Only rarely do I run into a disagreeable person when I'm on assignment." The exhibit offers students, as well as area residents, the opportunity to revel in and reflect upon the joys of Ann Arbor. By utilizing humor, intrigue, and action within his photographs Kalmbach gives his exhibition the full richness needed to capture the many facets of University life. Bob Kalmbach's exhibit, "Kalmbach and Camera," will be on display in the Founders' Room of the Alumni Center through the month of September. HALLOWEEN HOMEC ( Who ............. ? what .............?
