Ray Fisher Stadium The Michigan Daily Wednesday, September 16, 1987 Page 10 Vitale seeking vengeance and victory By DARREN JASEY John Vitale was a fun-loving guy. He liked to go out with his buddies, take in a movie, go on fishing (rips. He was also a little on the wild side. Riding around in a truck with the windows rolled down in the dead of winter was his idea of fun. But that was before last Saturday. t VITALE does not like losing. In fact, he looks at git as an attack against himself as well as his team. .Considering the lopsided score of Michigan's loss to ;Notre Dame and Vitale's 6-1, 289 pound frame, Washington State better be wary of the Michigan tenter come this Saturday. "When you lose, of course it's a shock," said the senior center. "I don't like losing at all. I take losing personally, and I'll do everything in my power to win. "I came from a high school and a grade school that dardly ever lost, and I'm at a program (now) where we hardly ever lose." The Warren DeLaSalle high school graduate played an instrumental role in tailback Jamie Morris' 128-yard "ushing day against Notre Dame last weekend. But that Js no consolation to him in the wake of the 26-7 loss. , "I wasn't pleased with the way I played," Vitale .,aid. "I'm not where I want to be yet. W "We, of course, have to give our quarterbacks better protection. Give them more time to read the coverages. ,We just can't have those breakdowns." TO ADD even more fuel to Vitale's fire, the Volverines have lost three of their last four contests after compiling an 18-1-1 record in Vitale's previous starts. He has been starting on Michigan's offensive line since Mike Husar went down with an injury two games into the 1985 season. "As you move up the ladder your responsibility increases and losing hurts more," Vitale said. Washington State noseguards will also have to deal with Vitale's wreckless style of play - something that Michigan coach Bo Schembechler has called a detriment to Vitale's game. "Frankly," Schembechler said, "he's a little bit too aggressive in there. I've got to slow him down a little bit. He's missing picks and things like that, but he'll be all right." The overzealous style of play is the only factor that has slowed Vitale's development as a center. Before last season, Schembechler moved Vitale from guard to center to make room for the healthy Husar. "At center you have to be under control," Vitale said. "I play out of control at times. I've got to gear down a little bit." Prior to this season, Schembechler was willing to compare Vitale with any center in the country and called him a definite contender for All-Big Ten honors. As usual, Michigan's offensive line is of high caliber. Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz went so far as to call it the nation's best. In addition to Vitale, four other seniors started on the line against the Irish - Dave Chester, John Elliott, Michael Dames, and Husar. Vitale's buddies aren't to happy about losing either.
