Page 18 -The Michigan Daily-Friday, December 11, 1987 Rush Delivery BY JEFF RUSH Class in session... ..ecgers Bill Frieder opened the door of the Basketball 402 class to find 14 bodies slumped over their desks. Frowning at the sight, he flicked on the lights, slammed the door, and stomped to the chalkboard. "Glad to see y'all could make it," he drawled sarcastically while erasing the board with a cloth. "Now I don't want any PE 402 articles being written about this class, so wake your butts up." NOTHING. "I said, WAKE UP," yelled Frieder, unconsciously throwing the cloth over the shoulder of his sportcoat, leaving a trail of chalk dust down the back. A giggle leapt out of the back of the room. "Robinson, that cute face of yours will only get you so far in life. FRONT AND CENTER!" Sophomore Rumeal Robinson gracefully jumped over a couple desks containing still- sleeping Wolverines. "OK, partner," said Frieder. "With an attitude like that, how do you expect to pass?" ROBINSON gave Frieder a quizzical look. "Pass? Pass? Heck, just put me in the same county as my buddy Mills, and I'll pass, no problem." "You aren't suggesting passing through cheating?" said Frieder. "Nah," said Robinson, shrugging. "More like passing through the defense, through my legs, behind my back... Whatever it takes." In the back of the classroom, a head nodded in agreement. THEeOLD CARD SHARK, trained to catch the subtlest sleight of hand, moved toward the motion. He didn't like what he saw. "Rice," said Frieder, slowly moving through the rows of chairs. "You know I don't allow food and drink in this classroom." Having seen this act for two years already, Glen Rice ignored Frieder. The 6-7 junior sloshed a doughnut around inside his coffee cup, knocked the excess liquid off into the cup, and took a big bite out of the doughnut. "NO DUNKING," said Frieder, slamming the cup to the ground. "Aw, Coach," said the avid and artistic dunker. "Let a guy have a little fun. With the easy tests you've been giving us, a guy needs something to keep his mind in tune. Look at the rest of these guys. They're bored stiff." FR I ED ER looked around. Robinson had fallen back asleep, leaving Frieder and Rice to bored by schedule talk among themselves. "Easy tests, huh? Boring, huh?" grumbled Frieder. "What are you talking about? I take you guys on a field trip to Alaska - " Gary Grant shuddered in his sleep and muttered something about Wildcats chasing him across the Alaskan tundra. "- I put you in a competition with some of the nation's best andebrightest, and then I bring you back home to take a few easy tests before the big one in January. Is that so bad?" He paused. Rice had fallen back asleep. Frieder fumed. He threw the towel off his shoulder in disgust and paced back and forth, eying each of his students. "I DON'T understand," he muttered to no one in particular. "I work you guys hard all through October and November, and now when I let up on you a little bit, you tell me you're bored. How is that going to help you? Where are you guys going to stand when the Big Ten test comes in January?" Terry Mills rolled his head from his shoulder and stared up at Frieder. "Hey Coach, let up a little. We're sleepers - can't you get that through your head? Just wait till March. That's when the real test comes.
