By TAYLOR LINCOLN Upon finishing final exams, the menrs swimming team will head for Florida, but it won't be for a vacation. "We're going to eat, sleep, and swim," says head coach Jon Urbanchek. The team will hold Christmas training camp in Boca Raton and participate in the U.S. Open Invita- tional in Orlando. The Wolverines, currently ranked sixth nationally, will be joined in Orlando by No. I ranked Texas and four other top ten teams. The Open will also feature several of the best international swimmers. Winning the U.S. Open meet is not Urbanchek's main goal. He says the team is coming off of final ex- ams, and has not had time to train for the meet. Furthermore, Michigan swimmers are not accustomed to the Olympicsize 50 meter pool which will be used at the meet (NCAA events are held in 25 meter pools). This weekend, the Wolverines place their 5-2 home record against Miami at Yost Ice Arena. By KEN GOLDBERG The Central Collegiate Hockey Association schedule is at the halfway point, and the standings read: Michigan, 7-9, 14 points, sixth place and Miami, 4-11-1, nine points, last place. From the looks of things, this weekend's series at Yost Ice Arena is not a very exciting matchup. But don't tell that to Michigan and Miami. The Wolverines still have a shot at a fourth place league finish and home field advantage in the CCHA playoffs, and the Redskins only need to move up one notch in the standings to qualify for post-season play. "This series is so much more important than it seems on the surface," said Michigan sophomore Rob Brown, the team's leading scorer with 24 points (12 goals). "Sure, Miami is in last place. But they play us tough. "THEY'RE HOT and we have to play well. It's crucial for us to bear down and come out flying from the first period on. We have to start picking up points in the standings." Said Miami head coach Bill Davidge: "It's going to be a tough series. It's critical for both teams to make a move in the standings." Back in October, the Wolverines travelled to Miami's Goggin Ice Arena in Oxford, Ohio. The'Redskins ability to skate and hit with Michigan when the teams first met last Oct. 16-17, forced the Wolverines into many mistakes in a 6-3 defeat. But Michigan bounced back to win, 4-3, in the series closer. "Miami played us tough when we went down there," said Michigan head coach Red Berenson. "We certainly can't take them for granted." With a win and a tie last weekend at Ferris State, Miami should be prepared for the Wolverines. And while its 63 goals is a league low, captain Mike Orn (15 goals, seven assists in league play) leads the conference with four hat tricks and was last week's co-CCHA player-of- the-week for his eight point performance against the Bulldogs. INJURIES HAVE hampered the Wolverines this season. Senior winger Brad McCaughey (18 points) should see action after missing most of the Lake Superior State series and sitting out last weekend against Boston College with a sore back. Sophomore Bryan Deasley is just getting into the groove after missing the season's first twelve games with a broken ankle. The latest Wolverine casualty is forward Ryan Pardoski, out indefinitely with a leg injury. Michigan played well in taking a pair at home from Boston College last weekend, improving its home record to 5-2. The Wolverines home success will be contrasted by the Redskins strong road record. They are 2-2-1 on the road, including a victory over first-place Michigan State. "I'm pleased with our overall play, but it's time to start picking up points," said Berenson.
