Along with common na- tional and musical origin, these artists share a prominent social di- mension in their work. Our neigh- bors to the North tolerate and appre- ciate a much greater degree of politi- cal content in their popular culture than do we in the States. The overt political character of Bishop's music probably accounts somewhat for her lack of popular acceptance in the United States. Bishop's strident feminism and open lesbianism infuse many of her songs. Six vibrant albums prove that it is not a lack of talent. Her playful alteration of Gary Tiger- man's "Seduced" to a love song be- tween women was well-received by Canadian radio listeners. It will- probably not reach the airwaves of U.S. stations. Bishop has been cultivating an audience south of the border by opening for more established acts and playing for progressive audi- ences. Bishop was a hit this summer at the Michigan Womyn's Festival. Next Thursday's concert at The Ark will be the performer's first appear- ance in Ann Arbor. geonholed into the "women's music" category. In a better world, Bishop's sexuality would not be such an in issue; but she recognizes that it is an issue and feels compelled to address it in her music. Bishop would prefer to be known for her skill as a folk or blues singer, rather than her sexuality. Her latest album, A Taste of the Blues, delivers what it promises. The title- track and the cover of Billie Holi- day's "Tell Me More and More" ex- hibit Bishop's musical versatility and controlled contralto. Bishop also covers Joan Arma- trading's "Taking My Baby Up- town." On this song and "You Don't Own Me" she returns to the theme of accepting alternative lifestyles. But Bishop does not limit herself to feminist or lesbian issues. She sings about suffering and struggle from South Africa to the United States on songs like "Keeping On" and "If You Love Freedom," quickly becoming a protest rally standard. The song which probably best expresses Bishop's approach to life and music is "Spirit Healer," a song about finding one's personal strength and using it to help others. HEATHER BISHOP will play the Ark this coming Thursday, De- cember 17th at 8 p.m. Tickets are $7.50, $6.50 for members and students.
