The Michigan Daily-Monday, December 7, 1987- Page 11 Crisler crowd sends Central cowering (Continued from Page 10) Michigan maintained its early lead until midway through the first half, when the Chippewas mounted a comeback. Trailing, 18-9, Majerle and Johnson combined for nine straight points, and after Rice goal- tended on a Johnson fast break layup, the score was tied at 18. At this point, Robinson found Mills in the middle of the Central zone for an easy dunk and the Wolverines never looked back. "Except for those three minutes, we really played an exceptional first half of basketball," head coach Bill Frieder said. Shooting percentages were a ma- jor factor in the runaway first half. The Wolverines hit 19 of 31 shots (61 percent), while the Chippewas connected on only 9 of 31 shots (29 percent). Although Central shot a more re- spectable 44 percent from the field in the second half, their long range shots didn't connect enough to put a dent in the Wolverine lead. Robinson played his best game of the year and. gave the fans some ex- citement midway through the second half on a fast break. He faked a pass to Rice and hit a sensational layup while being fouled. Robinson, who scored a season-high 11 points, missed the free throw, and Rice came from nowhere to slam in the rebound and get the crowd back on its feet. "That was exciting. It got the whole team geeked up," Rice said of his spectacular slam. "Everybody started playing real hard. We needed a little excitement because the game had gotten a little sluggish, so I just took it upon myself to get the crowd ~ The fans were really up when Tait scored his first points as a Wolverine with 59 seconds remaining in the game. Tait, who came to Michigan on a football scholarship, joined the team as a walk-on after a career-end- ing football injury. The 6-7 senior grabbed a missed free throw by mike Griffin and put in the rebound for his first score. The fans went crazy as Tait ran down the court jumping up and down. The fans screamed for the the Wolverines to hit the century mark at the end of the game, but a three-point attempt by Steve Stoyko from the corner just missed. Wrestlers finish fourth at Las Vegas By RICHARD EISEN Viva Las Vegas! Las Vegas, the mecca of decadence. Las Vegas, a town where you can lose both your pride and your shirt. Las Vegas, home of the Las Vegas Classic, where the best wrestling teams from all over the country come to compete. Michigan lost neither its pride nor its shirts in the contest, finishing fourth, ahead of rivals Iowa and Iowa State. And that's big news. Michigan, one of 39 teams at Las Vegas, finished with 92.5 points, behind Oklahoma (102.5), Oklahoma State (128.5), and first place winner Arizona State (147). Finishing fourth among such competition pleased coach Dale Bahr. "This was our best performance in the Las Vegas Classic we've ever had," said Bahr. "We've been working real hard and it was nice to be rewarded with a good performance." Michigan was led, once again, by its hottest wrestler, John Fisher. Fisher - named Michigan's Champion Wrestler each of the last two weeks - this week finished second in the 134 class. Fisher made it all the way to the championship match, only to lose to the reigning world champion, Oklahoma State's John Smith. 'I I . Normandie Flowers I 1104 S.
