R: Because first of all that is not the essence of Christianity and secondly you don't change things by l;eaving them. This kind of position of the Catholic Bishops does not represent the majority view of the Catholic people so there's a concern to mobilize this sort of ethical, theological thought in an alternative position within that religious com- munity itself. And also, of course, for that society. This is like saying, "if you don't like Reagan, why not leave the country?" and I don't think you'd ask me that about citizenship so I don't see why you'd ask me that about a religious community. D: It's easier to leave a religious community. R: It may be if you have no identity with it but that's not my position. D: A lot of people do it. R: They do. Alot of people emigrate (from) countries too. (laughs) D: What do you feel is the reason behind the official church position on homosexuality? R: Well the official position on homosexuality is based on the notion that only reproductive sex is allowable and therefore any non- reproductive sex , heterosexual or homosexual is a sin. That's the official root of that. that has very little relevance to real human relationships so it's part and parcel of a whole complex, inadequate sexual ethics. It happens that prob- ably 40 percent of the Roman Cath- olic clergy is homosexual so they're also doing a big cover-up job. D: So they're afraid to come to grips with that? R : Yeah, right but the Protestants are too D: How do you feel about the celibacy rule? R: Celibacy never should have been attached to ordination in the first place. It belongs to the mon- astic tradition, it doesn't belong to the ordained ministry. D: Is that something else you would work for?
