4 Page 16-The Michigan Daily-Friday, December 4, 1987 CMU sets sights on Blue By GREG MOLZON It's December in Ann Arbor and that means a couple of different things to the students at the University of Michigan. It's snowing, finals are coming up soon, and the basketball team is hosting a bunch of "creampuffs" at Crisler Arena during the non- conference portion of their schedule. This December is certainly no different than any other. Although the Wolverines did play three teams in the Great Alaskan Shootout that will probably make the NCAAs this year, technically, those games were in November. December was ushered in with a 92-71 Michigan victory over Bowling Green on Wednesday. The Wolverines will also play Austin Peay, Grambling State, and the Michigans (Eastern, Western, and Northern) within the next month. Not exactly a who's who list of Top 20 teams, to say the least. However, tomorrow the Wolverines, 3-1, will host a defending conference champion that returns three starters from last year's 22-8 NCAA entry. Central Michigan will visit Crisler Arena for a 2 p.m. tipoff. THE CHIPPEWAS are only from the Mid-American conference and did lose in the first round of the NCAAs last year, but of all of the Wolverines' December foes, they are best equipped to pull off an upset. 'M' cagers look to shut down Majerle, Chippewas "To be honest, I don't know a lot about them," Michigan head coach Bill Frieder said. "I just know they're the defending MAC champions and you know they're going to scrap against Michigan and they'll probably play very well." Playing the best will be senior forward Dan Majerle. Rated as one of the country's top 20.power forwards, Majerle has averaged 28.8 points and 8.5 rebounds in his first four contests this season. Central Michigan, 2-2, made it to the final game of the Hawaii Pacific tournament last week, only to lose to Alabama on a three-point shot at the buzzer, 83-80. Majerle, who scored 102 points and had 24 rebounds in three games in Hawaii, was named the MAC Player of the Week for his performance. FRIEDER KNOWS it won't be easy containing the 6-6, Traverse City native. "He's an animal," Frieder said. "We're going to have to work extremely hard to handle him and it's going to be a battle." The Wolverines were very successful in handling Majerle last season, as they limited him to eight points and won the game, 76-56. The Chippewas had the lead in the first half of that game, though, and trailed by only four at halftime before Garde Thompson's outside shooting gave Michigan its 11th win in 12 meetings in the career series between the two schools. The Chippewa program, which finished last in the MAC only two years ago, turned around with the arrival of head coach Charlie Coles. Coles had coached as an assistant for the University of Detroit and had spent many years at the helm for Saginaw High School before arriving in Mt. Pleasant before the 1985-86 season. COLES WON HIS FIRST conference championship last year and is favored to win another this year. Besides Majerle, guard Tommie Johnson and center Daryl Miller are returning starters. Miller, a high school teammate of Wolverine Glen Rice at Flint Northwestern, is a 6-8 junior center. He is averaging 5.5 points and 4.3 rebounds per game, while Johnson is popping for 21.8 points per game from the off-guard spot. Ed Wilcox (12.5 ppg.) starts opposite of Majerle at forward and 5- 7 Derrick Richmond (31 assists) is the point guard. The main contributors off the bench for the Chippewas are Andrew McGuire and Yamen Sanders inside, and first-year players Jeff Majerle (Dan's brother) and Sean Watters outside. It's not impossible, but Central will need outstanding play from all its players to have a chance against the Wolverines. "It's scary to think of all the ability (Michigan) puts on the floor," Coles said. "It will be a tremendous challenge and excellent opportunity for us." On the other hand, Bowling Green coach Jim Larranaga noted how the Wolverines won't be able to cruise through the Chippewas as easily as they do with some other teams. "I would have to think that Michigan with a couple of days rest would be awfully tough, but I'd say Central Michigan is the type of team they'll have to play well to beat," he said.
