a1L .LS WIN INVITATIONAL EASIL Y The Michigan Daily-Friday, December 4, 1987- Page 15 Women cagers go 4M7 swimmers open year at EMU By TAYLOR LINCOLN The men's swimming team will have its first opportunity to showcase the entire '87-'88 squad when it travels to Ypsilanti this weekend for the Eastern Michigan University Invitational. The invitational field of Kenyon, Oakland University, and host school Eastern Michigan is not expected to give Michigan much of a test. The Wolverines return all but two swimmers from last year's Big Ten championship team and are ranked sixth nationally in the N C A A coaches poll. They should win handily this weekend. The meet begins at 6 p.m. at EMU. It will continue Saturday with starting times at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. SO FAR, the team's only action has been an intra-squad meet in Ann Arbor, and a Big Ten relay meet held at Northwestern. Michigan won five of 10 events in Evanston, with Iowa winning four and Wisconsin taking the other. Though the Wolverines will not face stiff competition this weekend, the meet will provide an opportunity to qualify some of their top swimmers for the NCAA meet, to be held in early April. Swimmers can qualify for the national meet at any time during the year-based solely upon satisfying a set time requirement. Most swimmers who qualify for nationals do not do so until the Big Ten meet (March 3-5), but head coach Jon Urbanchek hopes to get some qualifications out of the way early. "We're shooting for season-best times (to date), and to qualify a few for the NCAAs." AMONG THE prominent returnees from last year's team who hope to meet NCAA qualification times this weekend are sophomore Brent Lang (50, 100, and 200-yard freestyles, and 200-yard individual medley), junior Marty Moran(100 and 200-yard butterflies), and senior Jan-Erick Olsen (100 and 200-yard breathstrokes). All three swimmers hold school records and all three finished in the top 15 nationally last year in at least one event. Moran reached the consolation finals in the 100 and 200-yard freestyles. Olson was fourth in the 100-yard backstroke, and Moran fifth in the 200-yard butterfly. Mike Berrowman, a first-year swimmer from Potomac, Md., enters the program with a world of promise. He is already flirting with Olsen's school records in the 100 and 200-yard butterflies. THE ONLY PLAYERS missing from last year's squad are freestylists Dave Kerska and Joe Parker. Parker holds school records in the 50 and 100-yard freestyles, while Kerska won the Big Ten in the 100-yard freestyle. Both have remained with the team as graduate assistant coaches. Parker said the main goals of this year's team are to improve on its sixth place national ranking and to repeat as Big Ten champions. Iowa and Indiana are expected to be Michigan's most formidable challengers. Michigan will see its first strong competition over the holidays in the U.S. Open Championship in Orlando. Fla. Four top ten teams, including No. 1 ranked Texas, will join Michigan at the invitational. Following that meet, the Wolverines will continue to train intensely, until mid-February, when they will begin tapering down their training routine-priming themselves for the Big Ten meet in Indianapolis. WEEKEND MAGAZINE Fridays in The Daily 763-0379 south for By MICHAEL SALINSKY The women's basketball team's trip to North Carolina this weekend will be a welcome escape from the harsh weather of Ann Arbor. It will also be a welcome change of scenery from Crisler Arena and the memory of the 92- 70 mauling at the hands of Oakland University, Tuesday night. The Wolverines hope they can regroup at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational tonight and tomorrow in Chapel Hill. The field, i n addition to Michigan, includes Iowa State, Northeastern, and host North Carolina. Although the south should present some nice weather, the Wolverines won't be whistling Dixie to face North Carolina tonight in the opening game. The Lady Tar Heels, 1-1 on the year, have received five consecutive NCAA tournament bids. Last year's squad finished at 19-10, third in the ACC. NORTH CAROLINA is led by senior forwards, Tia Poindexter and Chryss Watts, who are averaging 17 and 15.5 points per game, respectively. Poindexter also leads the team in rebounds with 19. "We have several players who. to urney are especially gifted," said North Carolina head coach Sylvia Rhyner Hatchell, "and those gifts have been overshadowed in the past three years." Rhyner Hatchell was alluding to last year's all-ACC center Dawn Royster who graduated after averaging 18.7 ppg. The Lady Tar Heels, unlike the Wolverines, are an experienced squad. Senior center Kathy Wilson (14 ppg.) joins Poindexter and Watts for an all-senior front line. The leader in assists, guard Jenny Yapp, is a junior. MICHIGAN, on the other hand, has started one senior, three sophomores, and one first-year student during its 1-1 start. Senior guard Vonnie Thompson leads Michigan with 12 assists. The Wolverines, played well in their opener, topping.Indianapolis by 16 points. Tempie Brown, Michigan's leading scorer, tallied 25 points in the game. Tuesday's game, however, was a disaster. "We were outplayed in every aspect of the game," said Michigan head coach Bud VanDeWege after the Wolverines shot .378 from the floor and turned the ball over 32 times in Oakland's 22-point victory. Iowa State (12-16 last year) faces Northeastern in the other opening round game tonight. 9 For The Holidays ,.. y-1 , ' r i .{ r it's Doily Photo by JOHN MUNSON Michigan's Marty Moran is one of many returning veterans on the men's swimming team.
