Copeland's fiery guitar attack and soulful vocals are in tune with the Lone Star state instead of the more recognized style of Chicago blues. Arts Chorale Doily Photo by SCOTT LTUCHY Jonathan Hirsh directs Arts Chorale at St. Andrew's Church in Ann Arbor during a rehearsal for their performance there on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. This is their 40th season, and they'll perform a 350th birthday celebration for Dietrich Buxtehude as well as 'The Christmas Story' with music by Heinrich Schutz. 4 'Three Men and a Baby' bounces with charm By Mark Shaiman What happens when a baby turns up at the front door of an apartment inhabited by three bachelors? Lots of laughs. There are so many laughs that you are better off seeing Three Men and a Baby at a weekday mati- nee showing so that the roar of the crowd does not drown out half the lines. This film is based on the French farce Tres Hommes et un Couffin ("Three Men and a Cradle"), which was nominated for Best Foreign Film of 1985. Fortunately this ver- sion follows closely to the original, just Americanized. Peter (Tom Selleck), Michael (Steve Guttenberg), and Jack (Ted Danson) are three yuppies who share a penthouse in New York City. While Jackis awaywfilming a TV movie, he gets two packages; the first is a baby. After that Peter and Michael don't care what the other one is. So when two men arrive to pick up the "package," they are first given the baby. The other package leads to an encounter with some seedy char- acters and puts them in some danger. But this problem is solved halfway through the film, making it seem simple compared to caring for a baby. Three Men and a Baby is a simple comedy, but a very funny one. And it has a load of charm. But how could it not? There is a six month old baby that is, of course, extremely cute. And there are three grown men reduced to making silly faces and boiling bottles. What really carries the film are the performances because there is a certain chemistry that works between Selleck, Danson, and Guttenberg - they look like they are having a ton of fun doing this film, and it is contagious. . Guttenberg is known primarily from films, but the other two have established themselves with TV roles: Selleck is known for Magnum P.1., and Danson heads the Cheers cast as Sam. But when these three guys sing "Goodnight Sweetheart" in harmony to put the baby to sleep, you forget the other roles they play and accept them as "the three men." Part of this strong relationship must be credited to the director, and he should also be given a slap on the back for his successful transition to comedy. Leonard Nimoy, the Dr. Spock of Star Trek fame (and now maybe competition for Dr. Spock the baby specialist) has previously directed only Star Trek III and IV. With this film he shows his adaptability and skill, capitalizing on every possible opportunity for humor. Unlike the original French film, where characters are content to be done with their underworld ac- quaintances, the Americans see to it that justice is served. But Nimoy has sense enough to make this scene a bit of suspense rather than a bunch of morality. The French version was nominated for an Oscar as Best Film, but I would be truly surprised if this American one will be. Comedies just don't do well with the Academy. Still, Three Men and a Baby is definitely worth seeing - it's as cute as the baby that's in it. 'Messiah' tradition lives By Cherie Curry For many people, the Christmas season begins after Thanksgiving. For others, it doesn't commence until they have seen at least one performance of Handel's Messiah. George Frederic Handel's compo- sition has become an annual tradi- tion in many areas, and t h e University is no exception. Starting this weekend, the Messiah will be performed at Hill Auditorium by the University Musical Society. The University Musical Society consists of a 250-voice University Choral Union, a chorus which dates back to 1879 when a group of local church singers united to sing cho- ruses from Messiah. Donald Bryant will conduct the Choral Union along with the members of the University Symphony Orchestra, and four soloists who have outstanding credits. Three have sung with Leonard Bernstein and each soloist has been individually involved in either music festivals, operas, sym- phonies, or in performances with the New York, Buffalo, or Los Angeles Philharmonic. If this doesn't seem like enough music, there will be a carillon concert preceding the Messiah. This special concert, performed by Carillonneur Margo Halstead and nine other carillon students, will be honoring the 51st anniversary of the dedication of the Baird Carillon in the Burton Memorial Tower. However busy it gets, don't let the season pass without bringing some holiday music to your ears. There will be three performances of Handel's MESSIAH this month, starting tonight and tomorrow at 8 p.m, with a 2 p.m performance on Sunday. The Carillon concert will be tonight at 7 p.m. Tickets are $3-$8. Contact the Musical Societys' Burton Tower office at 764-2538 for more information. -1 at O EIR~I1TZTM 1 at the Heidelberg 215 N.
