In fact, in games that he has rushed for over 80 yards, Michigan is 14-0. Although Morris was limited to 47 yards by Arizona State in the Wolverines' Rose Bowl loss last year, he has been known to have some of his best performances in the biggest games. IN THE 1986 Fiesta Bowl vs. Nebraska, Morris rushed for 156 yards and was named the offensive Most Valuable Player. Last season, the UPf All-Big Ten tailback had his best game ever against arch-rival Ohio State for the conference championship. He gained 210 yards on 29 carries, scored two touchdowns, and also caught three passes for 22 yards. .More performances like that will certainly help ensure another successful, winning season for Michigan. After all, that's what's really important. 100-yard games don't mean much if the team loses, and Morris knows that. "It's a team concept here at Michigan," Morris said. "Everything is for the team and whether I gain one yard or 100 yards-in a game, it's all for the team." Still a few more 100-yard games this season will certainly be needed for the Wolverines to contend for the Big Ten title. And another 200-yard performance against Ohio State would be a nice way to end a sparkling career in -front of the Michigan Stadium faithful. That may be asking for a bit much, but such a season would definitely keep the attention of Michigan football fans, and keep the spotlight shining brightly on Jamie Morris. Not even the rain could wash that away. (Continued from Page 12) slashing junior Brent White severely injured his knee in an automobile accident during the summer. SAID SCHEMBECHLER of the loss, "(White) in my opinion would have ended up being one of the great pass rushers that we've White is out for the remainder of this season and his availability for next season is questionable. Tackle Warde Manuel (So., 6-5, 260), and middle guards Mike Teeter (So., 6-4, 255) and T.J. Osman (So., 6-3, 245) will also be counted on to pick up the slack. At 6-foot-3, 248 pounds Messner is smaller and more mobile than most of his linemates. The Hartland, Michigan native indicated that his speed helped him lead the Wolverine line with 69 tackles last season. "THAT'S MY key to success," Messner said. "I'm a little faster and a little quicker than most linemen." Messner is also looked upon by his linemates as a leader. Said Harris; "Messner is the guy that is real energetic. He keeps the energy running through." "He is leadership by example," Reed said. "A great hustler. He is good for the freshmen to see how it should be done." The return of a veteran defensive line could help the Michigan defense return to the form it had in 1985 when it held teams out of the end zone in eight of 12 games. Messner and Harris were both members of that unit. "Our line could be fantastic," Messner said. "We've got a lot of experience. The defensive line sets the tone for a game. A good front line can really boost the Michigan defense. If we work together we've got all the talent we need." "We're a hungy defense," added Harris. "We just want to dominate the line of scrimmage. Control the tempo. We definitely can do that, but it's going to take a lot of hard work." i Don't forget to pick up your Michigan Daily.
