Michigan's foe: Lakers swamp the Crimson Tide By DARREN JASEY Last Friday's 10-0 loss to Auburn officially put Alabama in the Hall of Fame Bowl against Michigan. It will be the first meeting ever between the two football powers. Both Michigan and Alabama sport 7-4 records, and both teams have never appeared in the Hall of Fame Bowl during its previous nine years as a bowl. In addition to Auburn, Alabama has lost to Florida, Memphis State, and Notre Dame. Michigan has been beaten by Notre Dame, Michigan State, Indiana, and Ohio State this season. Since 1975 Alabama has com- piled a 10-1 bowl record, including victories over Ohio State and Illi- nois. The Crimson Tide was not invited to a bowl after finishing 5- 6 in 1984. Michigan is 3-9 in bowl appearances since '75. Last season the Crimson Tide whipped Washington 28-6 in the Sun Bowl, and the Wolverines lost to Arizona State in the Rose. The Wolverines have not faced a Southeastern Conference team since the 1984 Sugar Bowl when they lost to Auburn, 9-7. The only other time that a Bo Schem- bechler-coached Michigan squad has faced an SEC opponent was in the coach's debut - a 42-14 vic- tory over Vanderbilt - in 1969.
