Michigan Ticket Department SPORTS Wednesday, November 25, 1987 Women's Basketball vs. Indianapolis Saturday, 2 p.m. Crisler Arena , The Michigan Daily Page 7 Superior team First-place Lakers host Wolverine icers By ADAM SCHRAGER The battle between the established and the up- and-coming has been chronicled many times in the world of sports and this weekend's hockey series between Michigan and Lake Superior State University is a perfect example of this confrontation. Over the past three years, Lake Superior has won 20 or more games, and with 10 victories already this season, another 20-win season is virtually guaranteed. On the other hand, Michigan has not won 20 games in a season for seven years, and has just recently become known as a contender in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. "They (Michigan) are where they should be in the standings (tied for fourth place currently)," said Lake Superior head coach Frank Anzalone. "Everyone in Ann Arbor must be saying it's about time that this team is contending, but they are for real. They have good talent and youth and can only get better." LAKE SUPERIOR, (10-2-2 overall, 8-2-2 in CCHA), a team containing 14 first-year players, has not lost anything talent-wise from the team that finished third in the conference last season. Lake Superior vaulted into first place in the CCHA this past weekend with a tie and a victory on the road at Illinois-Chicago. Offensively, the Lakers contain as much punch as their National Basketball Association counterparts. Junior right wingers Mike de Carle (15-12-27) and Mark Vermette (17-8-25) have led Magic Johnson-like rushes to score the second- most goals of any team in the CCHA. On the defensive end, sophomore goalie Mike Greenlay has been tremendous. In his last three games, he has allowed just seven goals for a 2.21 goals-against average. The loss of four-year goalie Randy Exelby has been covered by the inspired play of newcomer Bruce Hoffort, who is the fifth-ranked goalie in the CCHA. MICHIGAN, (7-7), is coming off two home-and-home weekend splits against Michigan State and Western Michigan. This weekend's series marks the Wolverines tenth and eleventh road games of the year. Last season, the Wolverines captured three points at Lake Superior with a tie and a victory. While many would still view playing the No. 1 team in the conference at home as a disadvantage, coach Anzalone would disagree greatly. "We are not playing well at home," said Anzalone, whose team is 5-2-1 in Sault Ste. Marie this season. "We shouldn't have lost our two games here. Teams are coming here to play us at an intensity that we don't have. We are an erratic team at home and I hope it does not cost us in the future." " Bruising Earle's ego some more By STEVEN GINNS .- J .. s ... .. s .... v Here are the top ten reasons Earle Bruce was fired: 10. It was meant to inspire the Buckeyes to beat Michigan. 9. He is next in line for the vacant seat on the Supreme Court. 8. He was too upset over Bruce's Big and Fat clothing store in Toledo. 7. He'd rather be the OSU mascot. 6. He had an offer to appear on the cover of GQ Magazine. 5. He dresses like a mortician. 4. Art Schlicter bet that he would not get fired (Schlicter lost again). 3. He was elected president of the hat-of-the-month club. 2. He set a bad example for colleges like SMU to follow. 1. He needed time to find a personality. -OSU should hire MSU head coach George (thank heaven for Lorenzo White) Perles so Wolverine fans can hate him even more. -Surprised no Big Ten team was able to stop the Spartans this year? Just break Lorenzo White's legs. -The word pass does not exist in George Perles' dictionary. THE SPORTING VIEWS Eric Dickerson may finally be happy. After not receiving enough money to play football in college at SMU, he decided to turn pro. He spent a few miserable years not earning enough money playing for the LA Rams... Wonder who paid him more - SMU or the Rams? will be the battle for the No. 1 pick in next year's NFL draft. It probably will be Notre Dame's Tim Brown. -Great call by a referee during a Lions game: "Offensive holding on the offense." -The powers that be in profes- sional hockey, basketball, and foot- ball should consider forcing coaches to dress in their team's uniforms. Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka would look great in a Bears uniform. But can you picture Piston coach Chuck Daly, Mr. GQ, wearing a Pistons uniform during a game? Maybe it would not be such a good idea. -It finally looks like Pistons for- ward Adrian Dantley has recovered from his head-on collision with guard Vinnie Johnson during game 7 in last years playoffs against the Boston Celtics. His 45 points againstethe Bulls on Saturday night will attest to that. -Detroit Red Wing Bob Probert announced his retirement from hockey. Apparently he has signed a contract to fight heavyweight cham- pion Mike Tyson. CCHA Standings (overall) W L T I Lake Sup.(10-2-2) 8 2 2 Mich. St. (8-3-1) 8 3 1 B. Green (8-4-1) 7 4 1 W. Mich.
