Page 6- The Michigan Daily - Friday, January 16, 1987 al ler displays Japanese exhibit Participaing Ameritech PizesPlus Businesses That Offer Entry Forms and Entry Deposit Boxes for Your Convenience By GARY MULL There are shopping bags made xclusively for steamed rice and a Sweet bean jelly. There is a whiskey bottle with a Dick Tracy look-a-like and the miessage, "Hi! What's up? Why don't ,lve get together and make a wild trio? Just you, me and Cobra!" There is also a find-a-box that looks like it inspired Rubik's Snake. The Cobra Box folds into a rectangle -r a square, depending on the model, and leaves a hole in the center. All can be found at the University School of Art's Contemporary tapanese Package Design exhibition. .- The exhibition will be at the School of Art's Jean Paul Slusser tallery through January 30. The packages show an "intriguing use of design using very simple materials," laid Marion Jackson, director of the exhibition. Some of the package designs were selected from shops in Japan "akin to yery good department stores." Others wre for "commercial products that you :might see at a grocery store," she .said, adding that the exhibit "seems to have a range from cleverness that's fun to very sophisticated design." Jackson explained that the3 Japanese go to great lengths withx their packaging because they want gifts to be well-presented. In Japan, "packaging of gifts has a long- standing cultural tradition," she said. The wrappings are sometimes conventional, using glass or paper, and sometimes unconventional, using bamboo or cork. At the exhibit, one can find triangular boxes made of colored, ruffled cardboard, connected to each other with ribbon that runs along the edge of one box, through a hole near the corner, and around the edge of{ another box. There are also elaborately designed cloths, used in Japan to wrap and carry objects. To celebrate the exhibit, Art History Prof. Paul Berry will present a lecture, "Wrapped, Bagged, and Sold - Contemporary Japanese Packaging," in the Art and Architecture Lecture Hall at 7 p.m., Monday. A reception will follow in the Slusser Gallery. Daily Photo by DARRIKAN SMITH Two whiskey bottles with the face of Dick Tracy stand side by side.
