age 12 - The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, April 22, 1987 at Al's got them final moanin' blues By Fat Al Paul Last day of classes are upon us and finals are bearing down. We've got them final moanin' blues. Lots of viewer moanin' going on too so I thought I'd take this opportunity to print a few last Fat Al letters of the term. Thanks for writing in, kids. Fat Al: Love your columns - a lot more interesting than Bob Talbert. Ever try the chili fries at Red Hot Lovers? Best eats in town. Ever notice how 'U' students feel we go to the best university in the country? Don't we? Love the record reviews and concert previews - turned me onto the blues. Tom Streicher, South Division Thanks for the kind words Tom and I'm on my way over to East University right now. Hmmm- Hmmm. Fat Al: How come all your band previews are always so positive? I've seen some of these bands and they ain't so great. Maybe all those free tickets and free vinyl are affecting your taste. I think I'm onto something here - looks like a scam to me. Dick Smith, South Division Yeah right. Whatever you say, DICK. Fat Al: The Daily is bad, the arts page worse and your column the pits! Tracy Penland, Packard Something keeps you writing in, Tracy. Ever hear of the Ann Arbor News? Fat Al: Love your column so I knew you'd understand my problem. I'm sick and tired of all the brats at the 'U' who think they're still in high school. How dare people go to class and chat away while the prof struggles to be heard above the din. Don't these folks know that they don't have to go to class? Momma ain't keeping track and the diag's calling. Where do all these half baked idiots come from anyhow? The Empire State no doubt. Art Rummler, Catherine Street You've got a point here Art. Too bad the term's up. Take it up again in the fall maybe? But hey, let's keep re gional factionalism out of it. Everyone knows the Great Lakes State rules anyhow. How about all the recent protests around here? Great to see that students still give a damn isn't it?...Who is the "academy" anyhow and how could this year's Oscars have actually been real? Paul Newman best actor for a glorified pool video? Sentiment should play no role in "best" awards. Marlee Matlin best actress? Come on now, the academy just felt bad because she'll never make another movie. Great name though. Platoon best picture? Just easing Hollywood's Ramboesque guilt. Obviously, they didn't bother to see Salvador, the other Oliver Stone nominated film. Not only was it far superior to Platoon but James Woods acted circles around the canny veteran Newman. Speaking of Woods, his Joshua Then and Now was one of last year's best critically and popularly ignored films. Hilarious and poignant. And Alan Arkin is superior as Woods' Jewish mafiosa father. On a more serious note, anyone else notice what's happening to rents around good old A squared? Wow, right through the ceiling! Who can afford to pay such exorbinant rates anyhow? Maybe the same brats Mr. Rummler referred to in above letter? Slumlords beware, Fat Al's thinking about calling for a student rent strike in the fall! It would free up more cash for chili fries anyhow. Saturday morning cartoons just ain't what they used to be are they? Nowadays the morning tube's chock full of supernatural monsters, furry creatures and space heroes. Whatever happened to Scooby Doo, The Jackson Five, and The Harlem Globetrotters? At least they were people (and dogs). But it is good to see Pee Wee Herman raising Cain in the am. Fat Al's campus event of the year? Saturday nights' track/crew team's nude mile run. Maybe these lovable nutballs will bring streaking back into vogue. What's next, an Evil Kneivel resurgancey? C.B. radios? Calvin and Hobbes are the best thing to happen to the funnies page since Blooom County. Love that nostalgic feel. It reminds me of my own twisted and fat childhood. The first book of that looney duo is on the market. Pick it up for study breaks and keep those final moanin' blues at bay. . Think You're Pregnant? Two totally unconventional artists round out the group and give it depth; Hyun Mi Jang and Sarah: Braddock. Both work primarily with fibers, but each sets their own boundaries regardless of tradition. Braddock manipulates wood and. metal in suchstrange ways that she transforms them, so that one appears to be the other. This weird transpositioning is especially apparent in her rolled wood pieces, which take on a metallic gleam by way of hand painting. Jang's weavings utilize color as their vehicle of expression, capturing warm, seasonal moods. Obviously, this is just an overview. To fully appreciate these artists' varied talents, you have to see it, which everyone should do as a break from studying.
