While no team won an NCAA championship, four squads won Big Ten titles. Here are some of the year's bests and worsts: BEST ATHLETE: Gary Grant Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. With his spectacular moves on offense and Hands of Steal on defense, Grant was the superman of college basketball. BEST FIRST: Alicia Seegert The catcher is the first Wolverine softball player ever to be named a First-Team All-American. BEST FOOTBALL PLAYER: Jim Harbaugh A Heisman trophy runner-up, Harbaugh was the most prolific passer in Wolverine history. BEST BASKETBALL PLAYER: Gary Grant The junior guard was unanimously elected the Most Valuable Player by vote of the team. Grant voted for himself. Who was going to argue with him? BEST HOCKEY PLAYER: Brad Jones The senior led the Wolverines in-scoring for the third straight year. COACH OF THE YEAR: Jim Richardson The women's swimming coach won the first ever Big Ten title for any Michigan women's team. BEST TEAMS NOBODY'S HEARD OF: The Swimming Teams Both the men's and women's teams won Big Ten titles. WORST TEAM: Women's Basketball With apologies to the volleyball and field hockey teams. BEST SINGLE GAME PERFORMANCE: Garde Thompson The mad bomber gunned in nine three-pointers against Navy in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. BEST DUNK: Loy Vaught Vaught redefined basketball analyst Dick Vitale's term "slam, bam, jam" with his destruction of a rim in the Charlotte Coliseum against Navy. "I hope the bill isn't in the mail," said Vaught after the game. WORST PLAY: The Tying the Shoe Layup (as named by Bill Frieder) I EXERCISE IS W7SE! 0 I I Wvo THE "Y's" PHYSICAL FACILITIES ARE OPEN SEVEN DAYS A WEEK FOR FOR MORE THAN 100 HOURS. GIVE US A CALL TODAY FOR RATES AND PAYMENT PLANS. 350 So. Fifth Ave. 663-0536 i s -J 0 Q z W W Quarterback Jim Harbaugh, the team's best, also made our favorite prediction. Too bad he didn't make it twice. The coach didn't put this one on the blackboard at practice. Thompson dropped the ball back to Grant without looking. Grant was occupied at the time, tying his Air Jouberts. Syracuse converted the faux pas for two points. BEST COMEBACK: John Fisher This wrestler recovered from a shoulder injury that sidelined him last season to finish fourth in the NCAAs, earning All-American status. BEST GAME: Michigan defeating Ohio State Nothing brings more joy to football coach Bo Schembechler than beating the Buckeyes - except maybe having Ohio State fans eat pizza from his Domino's store in Columbus. WORST GAME: Michigan 6, Lake Superior 6 o.t. The hockey team led the Lakers 5-0 early in the third period. Lake Superior coach Frank Anzalone pulled his goaltender with 16 minutes left in the game. The move resulted in the Laker comeback. RUNNERUP: The Rose Bowl Need we say more? BEST TRANSFER ATHLETE: Ed Nagel The Pepperdine standout stands as one of the top singles players in the country and is destined to be All-Big Ten this year.
