Page 8-- The Michigan Daily - Thursday, January 15, 1987 M' out to avenge painful MSU losses (Continued from Pagei1) a defeat would give the loser a 1-4 Big Ten record and bleak prospects for winning the conference title. Besides having identical conference records, the two teams field similar three-guard oriented teams. SENIOR GUARD Darryl Johnson has replaced the departed Scott Skiles as the Spartans top offensive threat. The Flint native averages a team leading 23.5 points per game and tallied 29 points in Michigan State's win over Ohio State Saturday. "(Johnson) has been in pressure situations before because he's a senior," said Buckeye coach Gary Williams. "He definitely knows how to play the game and just goes out and gets things done." Senior Vernon Carr (11.7 ppg) and freshman Kirk Manns (7.6) also start in the backcourt. Sophomore Todd Wolfe will see extensive duty after his 15-point effort against OSU. With experienced guard play on both sides, the contest may be decided in other areas. "THE OUTCOME of the game could well be decided by which team's limited inside offense or defense comes to play," said Heathcote. "We almost mirror one another in terms of how we play and in terms of strengths and deficiencies." Before the season, Heathcote planned to bolster his inside game by moving last season's starting center Barry Fordham to power forward and starting redshirt transfer George Papadakos in the pivot. The 7-0 Papadakos (3.5 ppg) foiled Heathcote's designs. "We have been very disappointed with George," said Heathcote. "He has just not had the physical strength and toughness to log much playing time. We thought by now he would be contributing more than he has." Michigan's inside game has been contributing more recently. Center Mark Hughes scored 11 points, many coming from the outside in Monday's loss to Indiana. Unfortunately, Hoosier center Daryl Thomas countered with 22 points from the inside. "I've told you all along we have limitations on the inside," said Michigan head coach Bill Frieder. "It's getting better offensively. But when you got your center who should be a power forward and your power forward who should be a small forward, you have problems against a great team like that (Indiana)." Michigan's biggest problem heading into tonight's game is coming back from the crushing one-point defeat to Indiana. "We have to bounce back quickly and not worry what has happened," said Frieder. "We have to get our attitudes good and go out and work hard." The Wolverines, completely dominated the meet as they took the top three places in six events and allowed the Pioneers only one first place finish. FOLLOWING the opening relay, Bjeorn Warland, Bill Kopas, and Jon Teppo took the top three places in the 1650 as they raced among themselves. "I was really happy with the distance men's performance tonight," said head coach Jon Urbanchek. "They were all under 16:00 and had good splits." Lee Michaud, diving in his first meet this season, led the Wolverine divers to a sweep in the one meter diving.
