His 6-2, 200-pound frame is hard to miss. With his large build, one will usually find him around all the action, whether it be scrapping for a loose puck in the corners or fighting for position if front of the opposition's net. The freshman Deasley is making a name for himself around the CCHA as an aggressive, hard-checking forward. "I'd try to treat him a lot like lain Duncan (Bowling Green's 6-1, 204 pound forward), like a fullback in football," said Lake Superior State's head coach Frank Anzalone. "HE'S ADDED a lot of toughness onto our team," noted Michigan's Brad Jones. "He's a big, strong left winger." "Coach (Berenson) likes me to really check," Deasley said. "That's a big part of my game - playing in the offensive zone, forechecking, getting the team going with a big bodycheck." Hockey players do not come much bigger than Deasley. This partially explains why he has made the transition to Division I collegiate hockey, in his case, from his St. Michael's junior B team in Toronto, quicker than others. "He's been able to fit in and play at this level as easy as any of our freshmen," head coach Red Berenson said. "I LIKE to use my size to my advantage," he said. "There aren't a lot of guys bigger than me so I like to use that the best I can and take advantage of it to get to the net and score or get the puck to someone else so they can." Despite Deasley's aggressiveness, he avoids the penalty box for the most part, a problem for physical players. His 15 penalties in 24 games proves it. "He'll hit you as hard as any player in the league," Berenson said, "and on the other hand, if you retaliate against, he's under control enough not to take a stupid penalty. But you can believe that you'll be hearing from him again." "I don't like sitting in the box any more than the next guy does," Deasley said. "I like to play it rough but play the game clean." DO NOT be misled, however. The North York, Ontario native likes to do more than just sandwich opponents into the boards. His smarts on the ice and his other talents separate him from the so called, hockey goons. "He's the kind of kid that I think as time goes on, he could be a good two-way player," Berenson said. Obiectivism "His offensive skills are good for a kid that size. Normally, you get a big kid at that age, and he=s limited in his ability because he hasn't developed, he hasn't gotten everything together yet." Deasley obviously had it together in the Wolverines' season opener against Bowling Green when he scored his first collegiate goal on his first shot. A two-goal game against Michigan State also highlights his season. HIS 16 points (9 goals, 7 assists) tops Michigan's ten freshmen in scoring. "Right now I'm doing all right," he said. "I've got a few goals. I've contributed, but I know I can do much better, and that's what I'm aiming to do." Deasley's credentials will make him a good shot at the June NHL draft, according to Berenson. Scouts at the games give Deasley a good look. "I think he'll be drafted fairly high because he's a big kid," Berenson said, "and he's a pro-type player. He's the kind of player they're looking for." "I haven't put a lot of thought into it (the draft), Deasley said, "but it is on my mind. Right now I'm really concerned with how well the team's doing and getting the team going." At 18 years of age, Deasley has a lot going for him for one so young. He is a hockey player with a future. You might say he is playing it up big, something that he has grown well accustomed to doing.
